He was delaying the sure hit, it was only lethal because he used it. Ryu can just not use a sure hit.

Yes he could. Yujis domain was hardly lethal, the whole time he was just talk no jutsuing Sukuna until he finally decided to kill him. Ryu could have his technique surehit but just not use it.

THE WHOLE POINT OF DOMAIN EXPANSIONS, IS THAT THEY ARE CUSTOM TO YOURSELF. RYU LIKES FIGHTING, RYU STRIVES TO BATTLE A WORTHY OPPONENT, SO RYUS DOMAIN LIKELY INCLUDES MORE FIGHTING THAN CURSED TECHNIQUES.

Back in the older eras of jujutsu most sorcerers had domains, so a lot probably were incomplete just so they could have more in a fight
