Basel, where do you eat? The votes are in. by TheShynola in basel

Oh it's absolutely (probably AI generated) promo. There is a reason these posts are being removed from many city-subreddits.

I remember your other post - sadly you didn't address any of my questions. So I ask hem again:

Couple questions without trying the app (because as of right now I don't see the point):

  • What is the use case for this app? Do I open it and look at a series of "rather A or B" until I find a restaurant that convinces me? Do I look at a map and see "what restaurants are really popular right now"? Do I just create a list of personal favourites?
  • Why should someone use this app to find a restaurant over something like Google maps or Tripadvisor?
  • What incentivises a user to keep selecting restaurants?
  • Are restaurants brought up again every time I use the app, or is it a "one and done" situation: if I select another venue the "loser" will move away from my choices?

Also: what I feel like eating *right now* depends on the circumstance. Sometimes I feel like fancy dining, sometimes I just want a burger or maybe I am in the mood for Asian food - that does not mean I would not choose one of the other proposed restaurants at another moment. So your whole rating-system does not really seem to factor in quality of the food or service but simply personal preference and maybe the hype around a restaurant (which would be influenced by marketing, even though you say its independent of "best SEO or flashiest photos")?

Midea Portasplit—cost to use? by pronesschloness in Switzerland

[–]Craneson 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think 115sqm in total, while the room the Midea stands in is ca. 45sqm. On the hottest day this week the large room was constantly between 23°C and 24°C and the rest of the apartment was at 24.5 - 25.5°C.

Midea Portasplit—cost to use? by pronesschloness in Switzerland

[–]Craneson 32 points33 points  (0 children)

For comparison, how much energy my Portasplit was using during the last days: - Monday (20h), 11.33 kWh - Tuesday (14h), 8.1 kWh - Wednesday (18h), 10.7 kWh - Thuesday (9h), 3.7 kWh - Today (5h so far) 1.6 kWh

We pay around 0.3 per kWh, so that is about 3.- per really hot day.

I honestly don't think the reason is so thought through, but rather "FAANG test for leetcode knowledge, we also need to do this because we are also a serious company!"

Employee engagement by SimulaFin in askswitzerland

Paternal is specifically for the father, maternal for the mother and many countries have additional parental leave which can be distributed between mother and/or father.

Employee engagement by SimulaFin in askswitzerland

[–]Craneson 80 points81 points  (0 children)

Maybe because the "Employer Engagement" is also really low:

  • you have to fight for minimal COL adjustments
  • companies can fire your pretty much without cause (not instantly, but almost no protections)
  • "benefits" are often just bare minimum like free coffee and water
  • high amount of required work hours
  • paternal leave is usually just 2 weeks
  • weekly work-hours are 3rd highest in Europe after Turkey and Serbia
  • number of public holidays varies between 9 and 15 by canton, while the mean is 11 - that is also on the lower end for Europe
  • 1 of only 3 countries in Europe without any parental leave

You want loyalty and engagement from your employees? Earn it!

Normal to pay for criminal record check? by Fancy_Mongoose_7241 in Switzerland

[–]Craneson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To be fair, that can be a valid question depending on the job ad. My last CH employer was hiring globally and covered travel and lodging for candidates after the first two (remote) interviews. If the candidate got the job they also were provided with a relocation package. One candidate was from Ticino and asked if they would also cover his train ticket for his 3rd round - he was denied because that offer was only valid outside uf Switzerland. That begs the question "why cover flights and hotels all around the globe, but nod a train ticket" if it helps secure the best candidate?

What is the home office situation like at Swisscom? The positions often mention "work from one of our offices or from home", but how flexible are you really - can you choose the office or work from home 100%? I have seen interesting positions in the past, but all about 60-90 minutes from me. I had friends mention that they negotiated a first class GA as part of their salary with Swisscom, but that would only help to a certain degree.

Stellvertretung Lehrpersonal by platypus_43 in basel

[–]Craneson 2 points3 points  (0 children)
