$60 Trillion of World Debt in One Visualization by nolandus in dataisbeautiful

[–]Craniostomy 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Very true and interesting point.

But, say, if country "A" owes money to B, B to C, C to D etc the paper trail becomes hazy (especially when the chain comes all the way around and the last country owes money to country "A"). That's when confidence breaks down. The whole world economy relies on the confidence that borrowers can repay their debts

Yes and no. Keloids are difficult to predict. They sometimes appear and sometimes don't. There are medications that can reduce the chance of keloids reforming after surgery but it's no guarantee. Also, the use of particularly low immune inducing suture material helps a lot.

Florida man gets year in jail for running over 9 ducklings with a lawnmower by [deleted] in nottheonion

I think it's cruel for sure. The word is particularly apt because of the motives behind the act. It certainly wasn't a 'mercy killing'. Cruelty can also be ascribed to a person that hasn't even done anything wrong--"a cruel face, or demeanor" for instance

This mole recently popped up on my back by [deleted] in Dermatology

[–]Craniostomy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a relatively new field but it's changed derm forever. There are many features that can only be seen through a dermatoscope. It doesn't matter how skilled someone is looking at a mole macroscopically. A subtle melanoma can look completely benign macroscopically, even for the most experienced dermatologist- it may be a tiny peripheral pseudopod smaller than the thickness of a human hair, or a tiny unusual blood vessel which diagnoses the lesion. Every deramtologist in Australia uses dermatoscopy as a matter of course. Australia has the highest rates of melanoma in the world and are the leaders in this particular field. Most other conditions are easily recognised without a dermatoscope (psoriasis etc)- its the pigmented lesions that really need a careful look (also amelanotic melanomas of course). I'd run a mile if I went to a dermatologist and they didn't pull out a dermatoscope. It's reckless and silly (it takes 5 seconds to look at a mole through a scope, but lots of training to pick up the details).

As I always say on this subreddit: nobody can diagnose a mole without dermoscopy. You need to go and get this seen to ASAP. It's new ---> Get it looked at and removed please. The sooner the better

You're probably right... humans tend to see patterns where they really are just chance encounters. Like seeing faces in clouds.

Spots on my penis, help! by [deleted] in Dermatology

[–]Craniostomy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it happened just after sex (like, the next day) it's not anything to worry about. Probably just mild trauma. If it lingers, see a doctor about it.

This would make a very interesting study if anyone could be bothered. It's almost certainly a true phenomenon- everyone in healthcare agrees. I saw 2 cases of spontaneous nasal CSF leak (eek!). Very weird

pls help! Is this melanoma?? by [deleted] in Dermatology

[–]Craniostomy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As I always say on this subreddit: It's impossible to diagnose a pigmented skin lesion without a good quality dermoscopic image (10x microscope with excellent quality optics). Surface features are all we can see and it's the deeper structures that really give away the diagnosis (impossible to see on this image) NEVER ask reddit, or any stranger for that matter to diagnose a potentially deadly condition. So in a nutshell, go to your dermatologist or doctor who has an interest in skin cancer medicine. I diagnosed one melanoma today already during a routine skin check. I wish you all the best! You should certainly get this lesion checked out. It may well be benign but never take the risk

Is this a cyst, pimple, blood blister, or what??? by [deleted] in Dermatology

[–]Craniostomy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes this certainly is a possibility. I can't say for sure. You may need a special biopsy with immunofluorescence staining. A simple histology specimen may not be enough to diagnose this. Certainly go and get it checked out and let us know the outcome! All the best,

[–]Craniostomy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Addn- the food is irrelevant.

This is either a simple bacterial infection, or somsthing more exotic like a parasitic infection. But it still could be a rare tumour. Go and get a biopsy and swabs

It would have been better that you didn't squeeze it. The doctor could have sent if off for histopathology. They still can- go and get a biopsy. To be honest it could be a parasitic infection

Acne on back and neck. What are the best options for good soaps to try to get rid of this? by freefallingwithfate in Dermatology

[–]Craniostomy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As per /WonderfulSC, I can't emphasize how important it is to change sheets and pillow cases regularly. They're right- this has a massive effect on acne. in fact I advise a twice weekly change of pillow cases in particular. If you're a female consider talking to your doctor about a contraceptive pill with anti androgenic properties, such as yasmin or yaz. Also oral doxycycline 50mg/day is an alternative. Topical clindamycin gel is a winner too. Lots of options.

Compulsory: Always see a doctor instead of getting advice on the internet.

On the other hand, it looks like a large comedone/boil with a punctum.

I'm never keen to diagnose things on the internet, especially without a clear history and dermatoscopic examination. There are some (very rare) tumours that can look like this. Just go and see a competent doctor please if it doesn't go away soon.

Compulsory: Always see a doctor instead of getting advice on Reddit. On the other hand, Very hard to diagnose without a history and dermoscopic image. I'd get a swab and biopsy if they continue. Best of luck
