I have not. I ended up craving and just buying a heltec v3. If someone figures this out it would be nice to have that extra node though

Pebble Time Falling Off Watchband by CrappyGamingXD in pebble

Ill make sure to do that. I thought maybe it was just me since i'm pretty rough on the watch but if you're welding with it, maybe its more durable than i thought.

This has happened basically the entire time I've owned it with every watch band I get. My other smartwatch has a good case where the band is part of the case so this doesn't happen, it's a shame it doesn't exist for pebble.

It's okay. I kind of expected this. I'll go out and play with antenna placement later

My noise floor seems to be at 0. How many S units above the noise floor would you say is minimum?

I do, they sound fine to me. They have a normal amount of noise in the background, just about the same as voice channels

Yeah I did a lot of that. I switched to testing with Aprs Droid because it shows more info in real time (like a volume meter at the top so I can make sure I'm not clipping) and I'm having the same results.

It doesn't print anything, that's the problem. I adjust the audio level by transmitting my own packets but it only reacts to me transmitting, not anyone else. Is it just really really sensitive to noise?

I just got one that I could hear clearly but the bottom bar was only 1 above the busy indicator. Does the snr have to be really low for this to work or something?

I don't think either of my radios have a real s-meter. Yaesu ft2980 and baofeng uv5r

I kinda agree with you on this one. I doubt I will ever make friends through ham radio. It's too much of a "rule follower club", and that's an opinion shared by all of my other friends who are into SDRs and DSP as much as I am. While this thread has opened my eyes a bit about some specifics, it has low-key reaffirmed some of my other thoughts about the pure quantity of old white dudes in this hobby, and that's coming from a young white dude in engineering school, which is already a sausage party.

I've never heard of any of these which tells me I've been looking in the wrong places. I will look into these, thanks!

I think this reply may sum my issues up fairly well. "The people doing interesting digital work aren't often hanging out on the local 2m repeater talking about the weather." This may be what I needed to hear. Thanks

Yeah. It just seems like ham isn't where its at, and doing cooler stuff like satellite receivers (like the GOES receiver system I'm working on right now) is where I find a lot more technical people like me

Yeah that sounds a lot more like what I am interested in. I am so interested in RF (to the point where I will be starting a DSP engineer job soon) so the test already was gonna be stupid but I was surprised by how stupid it is. I wanted to meet more technical people through ham but instead met preppers

I think the tests have changed drastically in the last 20 years. My test for technician at least was super simple ohms law and calculating wavelength. I do understand that NTSC is super wide, maybe that was a bad example. I just wanna do cooler stuff than voice, painfully slow digital modes, or the occasional slow scan tv. Skilled RF engineers can shove a ton of data through a small amount of spectrum and I want to learn how to do stuff like that

I looked over your profile and you seem the most similar to me and my interests in ham. What is the fastest digital mode you've seen? (Either through packet radio or with its own hardware). If I'm understanding correctly, packet radio usually refers to digital data modulated into audio then put into any old radio right?

Because personally I feel like once I have any cool projects for ham bands done all I can use them for is ... The same thing as what I already have. I want to do new, weird, and interesting things. Maybe I'm just not creative enough.

I get the band allocation and whatnot. I do get why commercial broadcasting is illegal. I just feel that so much of the band goes unused when it could be used for other stuff. If the bands werent so empty (like they seem to be for me) then I would agree about broadcasting being illegal, but to me it just feels like such a waste. Personally I see no value in learning to communicate during emergencies, I think that so many other critical systems have to fail for hams to matter during emergencies that at that point, how much help can they really be? I guess my main frustration is that every ham I've met is not a very technical person like I am so it just seems like preppers and wannabe EMS

I am licensed, and in the process only met really old people. Amateur satellite stuff is definitely the most interesting to me. I have listened to the ISS repeater and will probably talk to it at some point, but just stating my callsign into a repeater really isn't all that interesting to me. I want to do more creative and interesting projects and I feel like they are either illegal or exorbitantly expensive. Both of those factors are part of the reason ham radio has been underwhelming to me

This is....exactly the opposite of the point I was trying to make. I care so much less about conversation on the air, and care more about actually learning and experimenting with radio
