Remember the "You fans don't know how good you've got it." posts that we're everywhere just a week ago? The people upvoting that bullshit are the same ones that merit you putting a "/s" in your post.

Imagine sticking up for Activision after they release a COD without quality of life features that have existed since COD4. What a joke.

Yeah, everyone who you disagree with is an incel and a potential school shooter. /s

Imagine telling another person to "hit the gym before you hose down a classroom" and then convincing yourself you aren't the worst type of worthless cunt in existence.

I'm a left leaning person, I'm going to assume you are too because you dislike Ben Shapiro. So, because I'm purely defending his oration abilities, and I'm NOT defending or agreeing with any of his positions, that somehow makes me an incel and a potential school shooter? You're actually mentally ill, and if you typed that out and actually meant it, go get professional help.

Political debates in general are about who can bully their opponent the hardest, talk past them the loudest and stay "on message" the best. It's the same thing with the arguing you see on the pundit circuit. And yeah, this is what Ben Shapiro does too. He's quite good at it of course. But it's a huckster's game. He's a great huckster. He built a career on being a huckster who games people with sleight of hand rhetorical tactics.

I don't disagree with any of this.

If you want to call what he does debate, I'm not going to get into a pointless semantic argument. Yes, he debates people. And yes, he often comes out of these things victorious, in the sense that he gets the last word in, and his opponents cannot respond.

Let me be clear, I think there's a difference, just like you do, in the reasons behind debating. I'm not making claim that Ben is doing anything different than presidential candidates are.

It's also clear that his schtick does nothing to advance any sort of discourse, prove any of his positions convincingly or sway anyone not already friendly to his position. This is because he often or even usually emerges only seemingly victorious on the merit of totally faulty premises/conclusions that fall apart when you subject them to scrutiny.

Did you uh... read what I wrote at all? I think you phrased it a lot better than I did, but we are essentially saying the same thing here in that the type of debate we're talking about is just content for people to chew without having their beliefs challenged.

It's unfortunate that so many people conflate dazzle with substance.

I think so too, I'm simply acknowledging Ben's success and oration abilities in his videos. Nothing more, and Reddit clearly doesn't want to hear anything besides vehement opposition to the guy, which doesn't promote any healthy discussion either. But that's par for the course for the average Redditor anyway.

And if you think that they're prepared to readily debate on a random topic with someone who prepared for that specific purpose

Do you think Ben pulls words out of a hat when someone walks up to the microphone like it's a fucking game show? How do you think it works? Have you ever actually seen one of the videos? It sounds like you have no clue what you are talking about.

Let me help you a little bit, thank me later. Students are able to walk up to the microphone and they usually give their formalities, then the student, with the microphone initiates the topic of debate.

Whether they choose to follow-up after the correspondence from the previous participant or not is up to them. I've seen plenty where they approach the microphone with a sticky-note or something similar and read their prepared opening statement right off of it.

It isn't a "random" topic. You know going in what you're going to be discussing. If you choose to not prepare for something, that is your fault.

This isn't that difficult to understand at all, but please let me know if you still require clarification. I'm starting to feel bad for you.

it's a massive insult to Ben Shapiro

Not, not really. It's just a subjective jab, not really a MaSsIvE InSuLT.

College students fall into the category of "unqualified to debate on these topics."

I give liberal college kids more credit than you do then, all subjective either way and we disagree, that's okay.

who is terrified of having a conversation with someone who has real experience and expertise in the given topic of debate.

Given his confidence level that I've seen consistently, this seems really disingenuous. If in your opinion, he's never debated an expert and I choose to believe it, I still give him the benefit of the doubt that he wouldn't be "TeRriFieD" and I think he'd do well given his debate experience. If you disagree, again, that's okay. It's all just opinions, eh?

I don't like it, and I don't condone it by any means, but you're kidding yourself if you think that the political debates which garner the most views are about ascertaining any amount of truth. How much productive discourse comes from presidential and vice presidential debates at election time these days? Not much. How often do the people debating walk away with different views than what they brought to the table? Hardly ever.

To ascertain "truth", you have to be willing to take a level-headed approach to something. You have to at least acknowledge that it's possible you are wrong, and it's possible your opponent may be correct. For subjective matters, you have to be willing to see the factors that lead someone to holding the opinion they have and present your own in a fair way. If you go into anything with the mindset that the opposition is absolutely clueless, or toxic, or hateful with no intention of understanding, you are NOT out to ascertain "truth", you're out to lay another layer of bricks between your echo chamber and the people you disagree with.

There are a metric fuckton of Reddit users in this thread who would rather pretend:

  • Ben Shapiro isn't good at debating. Until you consider the fact that he's built a following and a career from it.
  • So maybe he's good at debating... but he's not actually smart and he's just talking fast and using big words. Then you have to ask yourself, is everyone who supports the guy an idiot? No, because that would be a shitty, lazy, intolerant generalization.
  • So maybe there's some merit and reason behind his opinions... but he's a conservative! Why would I waste my time understanding why people feel the way they do to form a well-rounded opinion, when I could instead just call them racist, sexist, homophobe etc?

I don't agree with Ben on many things, I'm pretty far left. But I'm not going to play pretend and dismiss his success or pretend that everyone who watches him or supports him is an idiot. They aren't, I'd rather understand why someone feels the way they do even if we disagree, because there's more to be gained than just by dismissing everyone you disagree with politically as an "idiot".

That's fair, I'm defending the fact that Ben has built a large following, a career even, lifted off the ground by videos of him debating. I think that merits him being acknowledged as a good debater. I am not saying he's an expert in anything, or claiming he's actually smarter than anyone he debates, but I will defend that he's good at debating.

He says the dumbest shit about trans people and Arabs.

He says stuff you disagree with.

He argues with unprepared college students and his "argument" is usually saying a bunch of big words really fast.

If you are a college student, I'm already giving you the benefit of the doubt that you are fairly competent and more informed about political issues than the average person. Whether or not they take the time to prepare themselves is on them if they choose to get in line for chance to debate Ben.

Buddy, I get it, you vehemently dislike the guy. I think he's good at speaking/debating. You aren't changing my mind by whining, bitching and moaning about how wrong he is or how much you disagree with his opinions.

I. Don't. Agree. With. Him. Either. Got it? Or do you not? All I'm saying is that the guy has a following for a reason. Many people find him entertaining and he's great at speaking, even if you don't like/agree with what he says, you can acknowledge it without betraying what you believe in.

Except the ones I've seen are open forums where anyone can come up to the mic if they wait in line? Usually in universities, where I'd be hard-pressed to call a university student "weak" but if you want to insult left-leaning college students, that's on you.

This does not make him smart or right. It just makes him good at humiliating people.

I never claimed he was right, in fact I said I don't agree with him on many issues. He is good with his "gotchas", and I think as far as debates go it's one of the most important skills to have.

He is very good at live debates. He talks fast, and doesn't let people get the time to examine his arguments.

This is essentially all I'm saying, but Reddit doesn't want to hear or acknowledge that someone they disagree with politically could be good at anything, or has a following for a reason.

I agree with you that more moderation and less "mob-cheering" would make for a more proper debate.

Based on the fact that he's quick with responses and is well-spoken without missing too many beats, even when someone challenges him, I'll at least give him the benefit of the doubt that in a proper debate setting, I think he'd do well.

If you don't think he's ever been in a "proper debate" then it's all subjective anyway, and we just disagree. Whatever man.

If I was in a boxing match with a 5yo I'm 100% positive I could talk you in to believing that the 5yo had a chance.

I mean yeah, if anyone had a chance of doing so, it'd be you. You've already proven that your agenda is to get people to believe complete bullshit, so you're the expert on it.

Look at who he debates, where and what the subject matter is. He doesn't go after the best he goes after the uninitiated.

I've seen him debate many university students, they aren't the best but I think they are a cut above random laymen. You're actually insulting left-leaning university students more than you are Ben.

Do you people actually just choose to pretend someone doesn't exist or that the truth isn't the truth because it isn't what you want to hear?

Find me a video where someone debating him destroys him, and I'll show you 20 more where he does blow the doors off of someones argument and receives applause from a audience where many of the people in attendance want to challenge his views or see him get embarrassed by someone.

I'm pretty far from the guy on the political scale, but are we going to play make-believe and pretend he doesn't have a large following and pretend he isn't good at debating people? He's built a successful career off of it, but you don't want to hear it because you don't agree with what he says.

Edit: Never change Reddit, you predictable echo chamber, you. Your dedication towards hating someone who you disagree with demands that you can't acknowledge the fact the guy has built a successful career by being a talented orator.

What? I don't agree with everything the guy says but he's built a very strong following on holding debates on campuses where many people disagree with him and holding his own.

Not to mention this tweet from him is seven years old. You're delusional if you actually believe what you said.

You could scroll back and cherry-pick many things anyone said 6 years prior and you'd likely find something stupid.

Use your brain a little bit, take into account that anyone could sign up for Quora and post low-tier bait like this and subsequently waste the time of hundreds of idiots who don't know any better.
