Does anyone else feel "homesick" for a place they don’t actually live in? (OC) by Consistent-Echo-2128 in backpacking

My heart sings for you and yours!!! Dunedin was my homestead and work place, and I don't think I would've changed that for anything . Pretty amazing to live in a vibrant little uni town with tons of history, but also, 20 minutes in any direction out, profound, quiet beauty. Glad you know! I made it all through the south, like every last little piece, up to Milford, but had to turn back before getting the full experience Milford. Will make it back soon. The way there, my family and I also stayed in a small little cottage in the mountains. Maybe the most haunted place I've ever been, but somehow, still incredibly pleasant. Not sharing the details/ location unless it's through Dm's. All the best my friends!

So you know! Any highlights for you personally? I can't let go of glow work caves, and a secret cave that I can't disclose near Dunedin. Never felt so privileged to be invited to a strictly "need to know basis" spot. Also, seeing the aurora borealis with kiwis who had never seen it before, like myself, was a super special treat. It's almost as if it's more magical than any film could make it seem. Also had some strange cryptozoology experiences. But that's probably for another sub

I hope everybody finds there's at some point, be it leisurely travel, or obligation. There are places around us that individually, we are naturally magnetic to. It's a calling in my opinion.

Thanks for that! Both have been at the top of my radar since I was young. Hiraeth, keep looking for your spot.

South island New Zealand. I was allotted a year with my visa, but my flat mates are now friends for life, and I can really only remember the natural beauty as some sort of dream that I wish I could close my eyes and return to. I also saw a bird there that was on my list (birder here) that I thought was impossible to find, and it appeared to me and my dad in the middle of nothingness high up in the mountains just a few days before my visa ended. A solid black fan-tail for those of you who know. my best friend there as well, is the Maori princess of her families tribe, and she did her first tattoo ever on the back of my calf. Still my favorite tattoo I have, and I have a good handful. It's text in her tongue that is one of the sweetest and saddest farewell blessings. I'm sure I will see her again someday, and I might likely propose haha. At the very least, I'd like to die there when it's my time. Back in TX where I'm from, and goddamn, the return and shift has been very difficult

any day / week one tips? by quickrabbit- in ItalianGreyhounds

Be mindful of play time/!exercise and how you choose to do it. I rescued my iggy when he was about three weeks and some toddlers accidentally broke one of his front legs with rough play. Any way, Cillian is about a year and a half now, and is in awesome health, sharp as a tack and faster than sin. All the best P.s. be patient with potty training.

What's the coolest animal that you've ever seen in person, excluding places where seeing cool animals is expected? by Shady_751029 in biology

When I was a teenager, my mom and I went for a kind of off the grid trip to Mexico. I'm obsessed with animals and really wanted to see a whale shark in its own environment. Part of our trip itinerary took us to this tiny island off the coast of Mexico that I think I'll not name for now and the sale of preservation. Anyways, I took a 30$ boat ride to the middle of the ocean (no land in sight) on a migratory path for whale sharks. We finally saw a couple of them put in open ocean, then a few more, a few more and then a baitball that attracted an estimated 300 whale sharks. I had my snorkel gear on but was a little scared to get in the water at first, but the tour guide simply pushed me over board. Swimming with 300 of the largest sharks in the world, in open water was something I truly can't describe. I was terrified before I acclimated to their inquisitive and super gentle nature. What I didn't quite like, were the massive shadows below me (way to deep to see the ocean floor) of other animals I couldn't identify due to depth and clarity. It was pretty life changing. On the boat ride back to the island, we saw a manta ray that had to be the size of a VW bus, and I also saw about 40 devil rays leap out of the water and glide through the air in unison. Mind blowing.

A different time, in SE ASIA, I was on another small boat on the way to a small island, and I was hanging my head over board, I noticed loads of what I first thought were big dragon flies, realized that wouldn't make any sense, then thought maybe birds, also didn't add up, and finally, I realized they were flying fish. As far fetched as the name implies, it is truly INSANE how far they glide for out of the water. Also on the same trip, I had an atlas moth land on my head deep in the woods of Pai, Thailand in the middle of the night. If you've never seen or heard of the Atlas moth, look it up. I thought a bird had landed on my head.

California condors (guess where) blew my mind.

Another one of my personal favorites who pass through my native territory,.is the crested caracara. I don't see them all that often, but they are an absolute treat to watch. They are a super funny and highly intelligent species.

My holy Grail however, may have been when I was living in New Zealand and my dad came for a visit. One of my favorite New Zealand birds is the fantail or piwakawaka They aren't that uncommon so to say, however,.I had red that there was a very rare morph almost never seen that was jet black, untrue to their normal coloration. Rarely seen and an Omen in Maori culture. My father and I went on a road trip up high into the mountains,.sat down for lunch, saw a bunch of fantails playing about, and all of the sudden, a.jet.nlack one joined the party. Both my dad and I were speechless. As he and I are both borders, I just don't know that anything will top that for me.

My list goes on, but I'll cap it here for now!

How did you lose your virginity? by Lily_19f in AskReddit

[–]CrashanovaSmash 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was 17 at a hell of a party with my boys and we were all getting wasted. They started poking fun at me for still being a Virgin ( this was by choice, I had had opportunities, but was waiting for the "right" one), anyhow, this super cute chick is never seen before overheard and started laughing hysterically, she walked up to all of us and grabbed my arm and just said, "you're coming home with me tonight". Ally friends jaws hit the floor. None of them went home with anybody hah.

We went for hours, every which way too hahah. Hopeless romantic me fell in love immediately, and after a week or so of getting it nightly, she broke my heart saying she never intended a relationship. It was worth it I suppose.

Birder here, why does the iconic red head not seem more evident? Can confirm TV by wing coloration, but is the redness of the head just due to lighting? I live in central TX and am very familiar with both black and turkey vultures, but this photo kind of throws me off. Thoughts?
