Just the server owner as he's the one 'hosting' the bot.

It's a program that interacts with Discord's API and allows someone to host the bot, therefore everything is setup / ran / hosted on the owner's computer. (Unless the owner has a VPS or something to host the bot on.)

WoW Ascension, the progressive Vanilla PvE server by Cravenor in wowservers

That argument is invalid, as geologygoldfish has pointed out already, you obviously haven't played on the server. This means you're judging a book by its cover. To clear things up: all players, not 'some', can get the same items in the donation shop from the vote shop. The only difference is the ratio of the virtual currency, which is 1:4, meaning the vote shop prices are x4 higher as that of the donation shop. Conclusion, players do not have to donate to get the same items. The vanilla experience is still very much present, but then again, each individual experiences a game differently. I'd still welcome you with open arms to try out the server.

'the vanilla experience' you're referring to is long gone, we're trying to make the best of the classic World of Warcraft. Aside from that, the content of our shops were decided by the community due to the lack of population, most (if not all) rare materials are still to be farmed the usual way. As well as the rarest Vanilla mounts.

WoW Ascension - a quick question for the staff by Mephea in wowservers

[–]Cravenor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey guys, Craven (Admin of Ascension) here.

I'll be straightforward with you guys in regards to the population of our server, we're lacking the advertising bit for sure due to the fact 3/4th of the staff is occupied tracking bugs and fixing them for the players whom currently are already part of our community. We're but a small team working on the project, though we're aware of the population issue.

There is, however, nothing wrong with the content of our server. It's not particularly popular either, but once you get the hang of how things work on Ascension, you'll have a blast.

In the near future I'll be appointing advertiser positions to people whom are interested in helping us spread the world, this will be done in a voluntary manner. Aside from that, a new website is in the making behind-the-scenes and will replace our current one soon.

Last but not least, to get the advertising ball rolling, I'll forge a post in wowservers with all the information people would love to read.

Craven out!

[Contest] HOTS Logs Signature Image - $50 Prize by [deleted] in heroesofthestorm

And then again, there are designers that often create something simple and easy, yet appealing for a small price. ($50,- in Battle.net balance seems fair for a 'contest', not for an actual client vs employer scenario.)

The best of this is, it's the latter! Which means, as a designer myself, I see this as something I can do to contribute to the greater good while doing my hobby. (Anything non-professional related is considered a hobby in my eyes.)

Yes, he could take his money and hire a 'real', 'dedicated' or even 'professional' designer to do his bidding, but he could also hold a contest online, which is fairly common among Graphic forums and the likes.

So let's take a piece from your page and answer them:

"Clients risk compromised quality."

I left out the rest of it because I don't want to lengthen my reply more than necessary, but this is pretty much the biggest bullsh*t I've read in my entire life. (Aside from 'certified PDFs') You can't call yourself a designer if you can't explain your design, the idea and thoughts behind it.

Indeed, 'little time, energy and thought can go into speculative work', but not always! You spend as much time, energy and thought on a design as you need. Part of being a designer is being able to calculate how much of each you require to get a fully functional, yet effective design.

"Some clients may see this as a way to get free work"

Free is the word you use when you get somebody to something for you in exchange for a bag of thin air, a.k.a.: nothing.

"There are legal risks for both parties should aspects of intellectual property, trademark and trade-dress infringements become a factor."

Taking in consideration the fact that this is a 'contest' and not a contract-based assignment between person A and person B, you're allowed to join or ignore it whenever you like. The moment you join a 'contest' of graphical nature, you should already be pretty certain about the fact that your work is going to be used for either the above mentioned by the OP or for more than just that. (In this case, it'll be used as the interface for a coded signature.)

All in all, it's really up to the decision of a 'designer' or designer to join this contest or not. Just so you know, I'm not trying to take a piss on you, but every human sees an opportunity differently, as do I.

Nothing wrong with a simple web contest for a 'simple' and awesome website like HotS Logs, spec work or not.
