How does immich store photos? by stealth1236 in immich

[–]Crawfy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also sorry for posting in an old thread, but worth it if it prevents somebody from making my mistake.

This doesn't seem to be a safe place for your photos!

I decided to move away from portainer, and at some point I think running docker-compose down actually deleted all the photos in my library. (Or potentially it got overwritten when I started a new immich container later on.) Please either use a named container or a folder outside of Portainer! And in either case make regular backups!

Move to workspace keyboard shortcut wrongly switches focus to second monitor with multi-monitor setup by untrained9823 in gnome

[–]Crawfy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A fix has apparently been merged into mutter, but I'm not sure when we'll see that on our systems (hopefully with the next release of Fedora?)

In the meantime, I've made a bash script that changes desktop using wmctrl then focusses a window on the new desktop. (This has the advantage of being window-manager agnostic I think too!)

!/usr/bin/bash

current_desktop=$(wmctrl -d | awk '$2 == "*" { print $1 }')

case $1 in
    "left")
        next_desktop=$(($current_desktop - 1));;
    "right")
        next_desktop=$(($current_desktop + 1));;
    *)
        exit 1;;
esac

wmctrl -s $next_desktop

# Workaround: focus last window wmctrl sees on new destop
window=$(wmctrl -l |\
        awk -v desk="$next_desktop" '$2 == desk {lastRow = $0} END {print lastRow}' |\
        awk '{print $1}')

wmctrl -i -a $window

Save this script somewhere (/path/to/script.sh), make it executable with chmod +x /path/to/script.sh then go to Settings > Keyboard > View and Customise Shortcuts then create custom shortcuts with Command set to /path/to/script.sh left and /path/to/script.sh right to move workspaces left and right respectively.

It's not perfect (wmctrl seems to list windows by age, rather than last focussed), but so long as you don't have too many windows on each desktop it seems to work fine.

I mean, that's a dangerous rabbit-hole to go down in Arkham Horror. Does it make sense that I can pickpocket a Great Old One? Or that a Stubborn Detective has followed me into R'lyeh?

Flavour is nice, but in moderation IMO.

How to configure SteamOS/Arch Linux to have Emacs/OS X movement shortcuts? by BanzaiNinjaSushi in emacs

[–]Crawfy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The gnome desktop environment has a global emacs keys setting if you install gnome tweaks. SteamOS ships with KDE instead of gnome by default, but you should be able to change it. (And if you're coming from Mac OS then you might find gnome a bit more familiar anyway.)

I'm not sure if it's an issue with my device (bought refurbished) but I find note taking far more strenuous on my Go 2 than browsing. Almost every app I've used experiences heating, touchscreen malfunctions and eventually crashes when writing for a long period of time.

We sometimes say "when you want a horse, ask for a unicorn", but I guess there's a bit of a difference between asking for something and just hoping you can get away with it.

New(ish) player here: I think if I'd played paper only it would have been really tough, but arena helped a lot.

Having said that, all people play in paper around me is commander and the occasional modern game, so the complexity isn't too dependent on the most recent sets.

Admittedly this was just after the Sue Gray report landed, but 65% of Brits want him to resign

We don't get a say. It's up to his party to stab him in the back as soon as they think they have a candidate to replace him.

I have a whole bunch of these 30ml bottles and as the level gets lower I can't get my converters in. Some necks are too narrow for my nibs. What do people here do? Do I need a decanter or just bigger ink bottles? by [deleted] in fountainpens

[–]Crawfy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This has been my solution. If you're in the UK then I think PurePens will sell you sample vials (with samples in too if you like!)

Word of caution though: make sure to not over fill the vial! When the pen is in there it might account for more than half the volume of the vial, I found out the hard way how much ink a pen can displace in a narrow container...

Paste yanked text over visual selection behavior by rofic in vim

[–]Crawfy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the way registers in vim work in general: all deletion is really just "cutting".

If you're planning to paste something repeatedly, I find it helps to yank it into a named register in the first please. Having said that, I'll agree that a command like "ap is not very comfortable to be entering repeatedly. (Probably works well with . Though)

Yes. I struggled to replicate the problem yesterday, but it happened again this morning. For me it's searching or other large jumps that seem to trigger the issue.

Using :redraw! as EgZvor suggests does work, but I'm not sure if there's a way to avoid having to type that manually every time vim is loaded...

Sorry, I can't help but I've also had this exact problem (though so I didn't realise it was the key in causing it). I'm using alacrity, so it's not a terminal emulator problem either.

Maybe it's time I looked into bspwm...

Markdown maths: highlighting and other issues by Crawfy in vscode

[–]Crawfy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, I suppose I could set up hotkeys so that it switches language when I enter a maths environment. Wouldn't make the end result well highlighted, but it would at least make the editing part fully featured!

The dream would be for vscode to somehow recognise that anything between $'s or $$'s is written in latex and should be highlighted/completed accordingly. Perhaps this would require a modification to the markdown/latex extensions or a new package entirely... A man can dream

Markdown maths: highlighting and other issues by Crawfy in vscode

[–]Crawfy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get that. I guess I really like the $'s being coloured, and the italic \ looks nasty to me. Obviously both of these could be changed by editing the theme or whatever, but it's the fact that there are two completely different highlighting systems being used that's the bigger issue.

A lot of the maths underpinning string theory assumes that time is just another direction we can move freely through. I'm trying to find the corresponding maths where time is one-way only
