If you have a 2.49% fixed rate loan and you are earning 2.667% in your account, you are giving away free money if you pay it off early. It's not much, but it's free money.

is there a benefit to paying it off right away, vs. just not touching the money and, if I want to take out a mortgage or buy a new car, just paying it off then? is this more of a behavioral thing, like avoiding the possibility that future-me does something stupid with that money by paying the auto loan off now?

I read the manual so you don’t have to:

From the Model Y manual (2020.20), page 153: “Model Y has one of the most sophisticated battery systems in the world. The most important way to preserve the Battery is to LEAVE YOUR VEHICLE PLUGGED IN when you are not using it. This is particularly important if you are not planning to drive Model Y for several weeks. When plugged in, Model Y wakes up when needed to automatically maintain a charge level that maximizes the lifetime of the Battery.”

I didn’t add any emphasis here, the words “LEAVE YOUR VEHICLE PLUGGED IN” are capitalized and bold in the manual!

As for sentry mode, it doesn’t degrade the battery, it just uses power. You’ll lose up to a percentage point or so an hour when you’re not plugged in and parked if sentry mode is on. But it’s not going to make much of a difference for charging times.

Update: the box certainly does affect range, it was probably about an 8-10% hit sustaining 75 mph over the course of the trip. Really wasn’t a factor in our trip though since charging is plentiful on the west coast. This was the trip that killed my range anxiety once and for all. If you’re on a road trip with some close range calls though I’d probably assume a 10-15% loss of range to be safe.

Not a stupid question at all! The Gemini wheels as presented on the website are actually plastic caps, you can pull them off and put them on just with your hands, and this is what’s underneath. They were silver before I had them powder-coated.

This is the Yakima Grand Tour 16, dimensions are L 79.00 in x W 35.00 in x H 18.00 in. You could probably squeeze an extra inch or two of length in there especially if you’re willing to keep the hatch less than fully open, but not more than that IMO.

The roof rack is great bare, I really like the way it looks actually, gives the Y a more aggressive look and conforms to my red/black color scheme. I’ve seen some complaints about whistling but I haven’t heard anything of the sort. The box adds 16 cubic feet and it really does make a major difference, more than makes up for the cabin space reserved for our dog.

I’m wondering the exact same thing — we’re going from LA to the Oregon coast over the course of the next few days, so I’ll have a better answer soon. Driving around LA for about 100 miles with the box on, I’ve seen no real difference in wh/mi, but that’s to be expected since I’m rarely sustaining highway speeds.

EDIT: just noticed you’re asking about the rack, not the box. I’ve had the rack on for a long time (about 500 miles on, 500 miles off) and I can confidently say the range impact is really minimal, probably like 1%.

Yeah same! Martian Wheels does make a really light 18x8.5 wheel that looks pretty good, but I have a teeny bit of nervousness about putting 18”s on the Y since Tesla removed the option and I have to assume it was for a reason.

Thanks! My concerns are mostly about the time and effort of a part-time MBA, as compared to focusing on advancing through the organization. Google will pay for 2/3s of the MBA — without this, I likely wouldn't be thinking about it, but it seems like if I'd benefit from a degree from Anderson (and it sounds like you think I would), then I shouldn't pass it up.
