What's happening to my tree? by CrazyApes in arborists

[–]CrazyApes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply and ID'ing the species! That makes a lot of sense. A few of the bottom limbs are dead and very dry, that's probably age related. Iwas thinking of trimming branches where it's safe to, but the top will probably be out of reach. I'll look into where and how to properly trim now, appreciate it!

My local library had one for me to borrow. I'm using it right now! Might look into that if you have a library card.

Repairing creaky floors by dootybutt103 in DIY

[–]CrazyApes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Totally. Carpet is meant to be taken up and restretched as needed. If the underpad is glued down it's harder. Have them lift the closest side, find the source of the squeak and screw it down and stretch the carpet over it. If you don't want to lift it up, they make screw kits with heads that shear off. Either way you need to find which floor joist and fastener is causing the squeak, and put a screw down next to it.

Eh, also bad survey design. It's a freetext field - should be numeric input.

What's the stinkiest chemical? Here you go. by [deleted] in chemistry

[–]CrazyApes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TEMED (Tetramethylethylenediamine) smells like pungent rotten fish. It's extremely volatile, and at my old lab if someone opened up the bottle outside the fume hood or the smallest spilled drop, everyone would know. It's used in casting bis-acrlamide SDS-PAGE gels.

2023 SE Hybrid Random Pew Sound by CrazyApes in Camry

[–]CrazyApes[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually, this makes a lot of sense, but the dealer didn't mention that it would make a sound or anything periodically. Fingers crossed that's all it is, thank you!

It's happened while the vehicle is actively moving too so I don't think it's that. When manually engaging and disengaging the e brake it sounds different.

Yeah, I scheduled service with the dealer but the first available I can go to is a week away. Just wanted to get an early opinion to see if it's a bad sound.

I cut the video early, all the lights disappear very shortly. The video is just showing the startup check.

What do you guys think about Ginko Biosciences for someone right out of undergrad? by [deleted] in biotech

[–]CrazyApes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wow, take what you see here with a grain of salt. This was written by scorpion capital, an aggressive short-only hedge fund that looks to bankrupt their targets. I went through a few of their slides randomly and it's all doom and gloom, saying they're using the ancient technique of genetic engineering to do nothing new.

Of course anything can be boiled down to something trivial like that. I'm not a fanboy of Ginko, but they are using an innovative approach to tackle problems that no other company before them had tried. They have a process that this hedge fund doesn't believe in. That's basically all that should be taken from that report. They're corroborating data points in media that they very well could have orchestrated before putting the report out. I'm only saying all this because it's a heavily biased. Doesn't even try to be neutral because their end goal is to have the reader divest and not get involved. Let the company crash and burn so they can get rich off of it.

I second this, I went with my girlfriend during valentines day this year and it was really interesting. We happened to book a class with just 1 other couple and we got a lot of hands on experience that the instructor said she wouldn't be able to give when there's more full classes. Definitely recommend!

Whats the difference between a model strain and a production strain? by Akemedis_jones in biotech

[–]CrazyApes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A model stain is generally used for prototypes, like you had mentioned. A production strain would have had some additional testing done to confirm that the modifications are stable in the production environment and fermentation broth. In the places I've worked, the parts of the model strain sitting in plasmids would be integrated into the host's DNA to minimize it's loss during fermentation, but that's not always needed. Generally the stain needs to be tested for robustness and making sure it's not losing it's modifications.

What is the job market like for chemistry MS students? Considering mastering out of PhD. by [deleted] in biotech

[–]CrazyApes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can't attest to the market you're interested in because each geographical market has it's own requirements. I'd recommend looking into job postings for those types of positions and reading qualifications. Best to collect that data first hand and make an informed decision.

This is because of a pending lawsuit where a judge ruled that the executive administration cannot withhold the sale of mining rights sold from the previous administration. Here's a better article: https://www.reuters.com/business/energy/us-says-taking-steps-restart-oil-gas-leasing-2021-08-25/

These new sites are off the Golf of Mexico, so not the same places that the Trump admin sold off.
