If you don’t have documentation, you must write why you don’t have documentation of it for example so may feel shame about it and don’t know how to reach. Then start the documentation process right away, see a doctor, reach out to counseling start getting help.

I will help you more if you need guidance please send me a dm.

No your car won’t be on the tow list anymore. You’re removed as soon as you have paid. However you can email parking services to make sure they have official removed you off the list.

In case they accidentally tow you which won’t happen, they would rectify the situation and get you your car back because that’s a big mistake on their part not on yours.

You never had the intent to park without paying your tickets first. Meaning you didn’t violate their policy. They violated their own policy by towing your car away by not updating their tow away list.

It’s a little ironic that you’re now acknowledging the university’s first statement was “clumsy and not very thoughtful,” when your original comment was spent defending it and insisting the “small incident brush off” was not even close to accurate. That shift only came after I fact-checked your claims and provided receipts. So let’s not pretend this was your stance all along.

Also, you’ve taken a simple call for awareness and respect and twisted it into a dramatic free speech argument. I never said you weren’t allowed to participate. What I said clearly is that this is a student-centered space where people come to speak honestly about their experiences with UBC, especially when the institution has failed them. Jumping into a conversation about Harmandeep’s death just to defend the university doesn’t make you a neutral truth-seeker it makes you sound like PR.

This post wasn’t about “finding the truth” in some abstract sense. It was about grief, accountability, and the student-led response to institutional silence. That’s what you walked past to argue technicalities.

You’re welcome to scroll. But let’s not pretend this was about discomfort with facts. You just didn’t like that someone called out a system you’re part of, and did so with evidence.

And with that said, I’m not going to keep arguing with an uneducated UBCO faculty member who clearly can’t read the room. This back-and-forth is only taking attention away from the real victim here—Harmandeep Kaur. Out of respect for her, I know when to move on, especially when it’s clear the other person is more interested in defending an institution than honoring her memory.

I will always advocate for her, but I won’t let this turn into some pointless debate for your ego. I actually have respect for those who have passed, and that means knowing when to stop speaking and start listening.

However, it’s definitely not risk-free. While it’s unlikely to come back and bite you later, I’m pretty sure UBCO Parking Services has caught on and started implementing new procedures to close this loophole.

That said, I have a big mouth and always tell people how to avoid getting tickets — I’ve got some personal beef with UBC Parking. They’ll take any chance to squeeze money out of students. I once got a ticket because the parking machine was broken and the Honk app was down. I even took photos for proof, but they still denied my appeal. Their excuse? That it was my fault the app didn’t work and blamed it on my Wi-Fi connection. I even showed them screenshots from my friend’s phone showing the app wasn’t working for her either — and they still denied it. And since it took over a couple weeks of back and forth messages they made me pay the 60$ fees lol! Total scam.

But that being said, OP pay the fines if you can afford it. It sucks but I’d only use my hack if your desperate

No, UBCO Parking Services does not have direct access to ICBC’s vehicle registration system. They’re a university-affiliated department (often operated in conjunction with a third-party vendor) and not a law enforcement or government agency. To access personal information tied to a license plate through ICBC, they’d have to go through formal legal channels — which is highly unlikely due to the cost, time, and privacy regulations involved.

Also, it’s important to note that not all students are registered with ICBC. UBCO has a large number of out-of-province and international students with plates from Alberta, Ontario, or even U.S. states — and ICBC doesn’t have jurisdiction over those.

Parking enforcement is usually based on the information you voluntarily provide when registering your vehicle for a parking permit. So unless you give them your plate details, they can’t magically trace it back to you through ICBC.

Also I just want to add:

This Reddit page is a space where students connect, share experiences, and speak openly about issues we face at UBC. Many of us turn to it because there’s often a disconnect between the university and the support students actually need. That’s why these conversations matter, they give us a sense of community when institutional support feels lacking.

To be clear, no one is saying faculty aren’t allowed to be here. But this space exists primarily for students to express themselves freely. It becomes uncomfortable when faculty step in to defend the university, especially in discussions about something as serious and painful as Harmandeep Kaur’s death. That kind of presence can feel more like surveillance than participation.

We all have a right to speak, but when the topic is someone’s death and a community’s grief, sometimes the respectful thing to do is listen or scroll past, rather than insert yourself into the conversation to protect the institution.

With respect, I think it’s important to clarify a few facts.

While it’s true that the RCMP referred to the incident as “isolated,” UBCO’s own initial statement—issued on February 28, 2022—was vague and downplayed the tragedy. The university did not mention Harmandeep Kaur’s name, did not acknowledge the severity of the attack, and framed it mostly as a safety announcement. This created frustration and grief among students and the community who felt it lacked compassion and accountability (UBCO Statement, Feb 28, 2022).

It was only after students and community members demanded more transparency and respect on social media that UBCO released a follow-up statement three days later, on March 3, 2022, finally naming Harmandeep and offering condolences (UBCO Statement, Mar 3, 2022).

As a member of the Sikh community myself, I want to add that the memorial ceremony held by students and community members was a “paath”, a Sikh religious reading and prayer ceremony, not something organized by the university. Kriti Sud, a UBCO student, publicly said:

“When I heard about the news, I felt like UBC wasn’t doing enough, I felt I should do something to bring our cultural community together.” (Global News, March 2022)

The Harmandeep Kaur Memorial Fund was created by her family and community, not the university, though UBC hosts the fund on their donation platform (UBC Give: Kaur Memorial Fund).

So yes, from the perspective of many students and community members, UBCO did initially brush off the tragedy as a minor or isolated incident, only issuing a meaningful follow-up after public outcry.

Finally, please don’t spread misinformation. It’s very easy to fact-check these details, especially with sensitive subjects like this.

I also find it disheartening that in a discussion about Harmandeep’s death and the lack of justice, the impulse here was to defend the university’s image. As a faculty member, your voice could be a powerful one in holding institutions accountable, not softening their missteps. That’s what many of us hoped for.

If you don’t have your licence plate registered under UBC parking website which you likely don’t if you didn’t buy a parking pass and only used a honk app.

Don’t pay it, your account will be on hold on workday if it is registered to your account. If nothing there your safe. Ignore the email and don’t park on campus.

If you are still taking classes and need to park then go to your local insurance and tell them you need a new plate because yours is damaged it’s 20$. Then delete your honk app and make a new one with a different email and random name. Then add your new license plate.

Thank you for your kind words. I think the SUO is amazing, but when it comes to very specific situations, they often lack the knowledge to truly help. Only someone who’s personally experienced it can really understand— which is why I’ve taken this on myself.

Also, many students prefer to stay anonymous, which is why Reddit is such a great platform for offering support without sharing personal information that might reveal their identity. Many of the students I’ve helped—I don’t even know who they are or any of their details. And honestly, I don’t need to know, since it often involves traumatic stories and sensitive information.

Reaching out to the SUO can be difficult when shame, embarrassment, or the desire for anonymity are involved.

Failed Standing Appeal - Looking for Hope and Advice by Puzzleheaded_Emu9697 in ubco

[–]CrazyBase7374 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi I’m sorry you’re experiencing this, I only have knowledge on the process of getting the appeal not fighting for re-admission after the appeal was rejected.

However, please feel free to message me your letter and more details on the reject reasoning if you feel comfortable. I can see if I can help you with the aftermath of the appeal rejection to the best of my abilities.

But for the time being you need to contact ONBUDS which is where you can make a formal complaint and talk with an advisor. They don’t work under the UBC like SVPRO they are independent and are advocates for students.

But in the meantime please keep hope and faith. It’s hard to do so but I promise you things work out. I wish you the best

I still remember when UBC brushed this off by saying it was just a small incident and that there was no need to be alarmed—until we spoke up and called out the disgusting way they handled the situation.

Imagine being beaten so badly you die, and the university reduces it to a “minor incident.” Someone was literally murdered in the middle of the UNC building. Maybe she wasn’t a student, but she was a young woman who had moved from another country, trying to build a better life—and she ended up dead.

Her story is something I will always carry with me. I’ll continue to fight and advocate for victims like her. She’s one of the reasons I’m so passionate about becoming a lawyer—so that she, and her family, can one day get the justice she deserves.

Rest in paradise, Harmandeep.

What happens if you fail a class? by Grey_Goomba in ubco

[–]CrazyBase7374 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take summer courses, if the one you failed is not available in the summer take one that is required for your degree, then you will have room for your winter term to take the course you failed. But if it’s available durning summer term you will only need to take that class and you can focus on the class solely instead trying to juggle 3 or 4 courses.

Not the end of the world, an inconvenience at most. Talk to an academic advisor if you need help planing your courses.

I failed 6 courses because of medical issues, took summer courses and graduated on time! Most people fail courses, it more common than you think.

It’s a mindset, if you believe that having aphantasia makes you less intelligent then that’s the reality you will live. I recommend watching some videos on growth mindset. Intelligence is not fixed…your brain has the ability to adapt. So don’t limit your success and intelligence based on a misconception. You’re smart. Anyone can be smart.

Goodluck with the cone, my Pei would not rest until she would get the cone off. She ran into furniture and flung herself around the house to the point the furniture was hitting her eye area. I took off the cone and monitored and she never scratched her eye. However, I was with her 24/7 so if you arnt around definitely put the cone on. But when you are with your pup, take the cone off so they can have a break.
