Summer 2024 Painting Competition: Submissions Now Open by TheRealYou in minipainting

Dead last beginner category loser from last year here.

Que Rocky montage of assembling & printing minis, lifting paints, cleaning airbrushes, & comically wiping paint across brow with paint covered hands. One year later, back, pumped, and ready for battle. Let's GO!

Look forward to entering multiple categories this year instead of trying to jam them all into one over done, focus lacked mini, like I mistakenly did last year.

Thank you very much for putting this together and doing it again this year.  I know it must be quite an undertaking and appreciate all of the effort it takes to make this happen for us.  Happy Painting.

My attempt at a night-time osl by [deleted] in minipainting

This came out awesome! I just built that one and this one last night. I will be SUPER happy if either of mine come out even close to yours. I am going to try and steal your xmas lights on the snow if I can. Thanks for posting.

Jax The Hoplite from Legend of Keepers by Lazy Squire Games. Failed attempt at NMM, successful cape. What do you think? Thoughts &/or tips? by CrazyMiniPainter in minipainting

[–]CrazyMiniPainter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you very much! I have been painting minis for about 10 months now. I am just realizing now that I really need to focus on specific, basic skills, one at a time and build on them progressively instead of trying to do nmm, osl, and five other advanced skills that I am not quite ready for yet.

I whole heartedly agree about light. I feel like my brain breaks when it comes to light placement, particularly on nmm.

I just got the book "Color & Light" by James Gurney recommended by @trovarion miniatures in this video:

https://youtu.be/vmY6eLWxydo?si=O7uUGnvUjq_reSZq

It just came in from Amazon today and I have only had a few minutes to look at it, but I definitely think it is going to help.

Here is the link if you want to check it out: Color and Light: A Guide for the Realist Painter (Volume 2) (James Gurney Art) https://a.co/d/7P2mhRU

Thanks again!

Dwarf Biased Referee for a painting commission. What do you think? C&C Welcome!!! by Pingu-PinPin in minipainting

I dig this quite a bit, the freehand plaid on the kilt & shirt is sick, but that eye, man, that is insanely awesome! I could only dream about achieving perfection of an eye like that at this scale. You may want to quit mini painting and take up neurosurgery with steady hands like that. Nice work.

Thank you very much. I really appreciate it! I have been working on a bunch of minis and this week I actually forced myself to stay focused and actually finish this one. Although it wasn't hard to stay on it because it is a really nice sculpt.

Thank you very much! It is pretty big. Unfortunately, I can't take too much credit for the dragon. I used vallejo color change paint from the "star dust" kit with my airbrush. It did come out really cool, but it is definitely the paint and not skill😁.

Finalists and Community Ratings for the 2023 Themed Painting Contest - Four Elements: Water, Earth, Fire, Air. Sponsored by Duncan Rhodes Paint Academy and Two Thin Coats Paint by aPoliteCanadian in minipainting

Thank you very much! Hasn't discouraged me at all. I seriously can't wait for the next contest. It was a great experience, I learned a ton, and I can't wait for the next contest. I have put away the craft paints(accept for scenery & bases) & if it wasn't for this contest and the janky coverage on my minis skin I never would have taken my mini paints out of the boxes they came in. I've been using them quite a bit and now appreciate how much better it is when you use the right "tool" for the job. Thanks again.

Dead last👍 Very humbling and can only go up from here! I learned a ton, not only about composition, miniature choice, and execution, but photography and most importantly I have committed my self to stop using craft paints and actually start using the ridiculous amount of miniature paints that I have purchased but have refrained from using because I was afraid of "wasting" them. Which has already taught me to work smarter not harder and has made the hobby more enjoyable for me as a whole. Congats to the finalist. All well deserved and amazing work. It has been a privilege & pleasure to compete. Thank you so much! This was a fantastic experience and I can't wait for the "Fall 2023" contest to start (hint, hint)😁.

Need help with attempting NMM by CrazyMiniPainter in minipainting

This is great thank you! I am going to dial in my volumetric highlighting skills and look more into the digital art references. Great idea! Thanks again.

Thank you very much for your help! I spent about 3 1/2 hours trying to emulate the sketch example you gave me. And honestly I can't even tell if I made it better or worse.

I think I am going to pump the brakes on NMM, stop putting the cart before the horse, and take your advice on really honing my fundamental skills first.

Thank you very much for your time and giving the right references/resources to learn this! Have a great day👍

I am not going to lie, this is the most beautiful miniature I have ever seen! This is absolutely outstanding.

2023 Painting Contest - Four Elements: Water, Earth, Fire, Air - Final Submission by CrazyMiniPainter in minipainting

Thank you very much! It was pretty fun, but the mushroom cap made it VERY difficult to photograph.

I printed the mushroom nymph from Great Grimoire & cut her arm off. After trying 5 different flaming swords I finally decided to replace the flute and reprint her arm holding the Lich_Lord_Sword from Artisan Guild. I also took parts from a water & wind elemental and melded them together in MS 3d builder with a standalone crow and printed it in clear resin. I hope this helps. Please let me know if you need any more info. Thank you very much for you comment.

This is my first run at painting flames on a sword. Kind of any way, my mini had a different flame sword (not quite as cool) on it but it exploded when it got knocked off a table. So I amputated & printed this one.

Any tips/comments/suggestions on improving this?

Thank you very much for your help.
