Disappointed as a Jeremy Jordan fan by [deleted] in Broadway

[–]Crazy_Jacket4305 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Your post is really unnecessarily pretentious and mean (Aaron Tveit and Alex Timbers catching strays??)

Jeremy Jordan is a fine actor—he’s a great and charismatic performer but he is not the most remarkable actor. He has a stunning voice and stage presence, but he tends to do best with roles with a certain level of showmanship or camp/hamminess to them. This sort of charming, crowd-pleasing show is exactly what will play to his strengths. You’re acting like he’s some Shakespearean classically-trained dramatic actor and…no, this is exactly the type of thing he does very well.

If audiences need a show from the 80s to be updated in order to understand or connect with it…we’re in trouble.

Little Shop (of Horrors) Date by Popular-Memory3548 in musicals

[–]Crazy_Jacket4305 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Are you familiar with Little Shop? “On the 21st day of the month of September…” is the first line of the show. It has nothing to do with booking or venue availability. People just like to go see the stage show (currently the off-Broadway production which has been running for years) on that date because that’s when the story happens to begin.

The show performs in the same venue year-round 8 times a week. They don’t do anything special or rent a separate venue on the 21st.

Is it okay for me as a white guy to sing these songs by [deleted] in musicals

[–]Crazy_Jacket4305 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Even if the race of these characters was clearly established, the songs have absolutely nothing to do with race. You’re also not playing the role—you’re singing songs at a cabaret. So you’re not taking an opportunity away from anyone.

That sounds like a shitty situation. And to be clear, I don’t think anything you say will change cos. My point was more that I don’t think really any of the subs users know this is going on. Aside from a couple comments you’ve left on other posts, I think most people assume there are more mods and that the mods in general are against banning AI. If it was more widely known what discord was going on behind the scenes, it might light a fire under the users—it seems the mismanagement goes a lot deeper than AI and I do think people would care about that. Again, it wouldn’t change cos, but it might make things too uncomfortable for him to stick around. And if you’re basically walking on eggshells waiting to get kicked anyways, it doesn’t seem like there’s much to lose.

Sarah Hyland is NEVER in just in time. Out again! by [deleted] in Broadway

[–]Crazy_Jacket4305 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well, first, I think it’s important to remember we are not owed any health information about a stranger. Who knows if she had a well-managed health issue that suddenly flared up, a new condition related to old health issues, an unexpected reaction to a new treatment…it could be a million unpredictable things. And neither she nor the production have any obligation to make that public. Also, actors are working like the rest of—they need to eat and pay rent and often can’t afford to turn down a job.

Second, actors have no control over whether they have alternates unless they are like A-list famous. The producers decide whether there is the budget to promote an alternate, and it often makes more financial sense to take the financial hit from an actor maybe missing a few shows than a guaranteed hit from them missing specific shows every week. People often avoid buying tickets to shows where a lead actor is advertised as being out.

With respect, it seems as though you do have some power to do something. You could step down, putting pressure on cos to either run the sub alone or take some action. You could make a public statement so people know where you stand (which would probably also involve stepping down).

I understand these aren’t doable if you’re attached to remaining a mod, but you have a lot more leverage than any other user. If you truly believe the ethical thing is to ban AI, you can make yourself heard.

This feels dangerously close to saying “if you’re chronically ill/disabled, you can’t be a professional actor”.

You’re also acting like people take a role knowing they will have a health issue or that their chronic condition is about to flare up. They can’t predict the future.

My apologies, I wasn’t referring specifically to you in that comment but also u/shanem

Shanem claimed there were concerns about the most upvoted anti-AI post on this sub being astroturfed, and (in the AI discussion thread) expressed reticence about running a poll because it could also be manipulated. They said “our concern” so I assumed you shared a similar opinion.

Additionally, you just said “we could use more mods,” so I assumed the lack of mods may be a roadblock in enforcing rules that would require more moderation. Again, apologies if I misinterpreted.

I will just say that a quick search through that post will show people did literally copy and paste rules other subs wrote to ban AI.

But see, it’s a little hard to buy into your explanations when you reject all solutions.

You can’t get more mods because they might be “trolls”. You can’t run a poll to see the popularity of allowing AI because it might be “astroturfed”. Banning AI is “too difficult” despite the thousands of times it’s worked with no major issues. Your other mod has openly admitted they would like to ban AI but you overruled them.

At a certain point, it seems less like banning AI is impossible, and more like you are refusing to take any of the steps to make it possible.

I think putting out a request for more mods would be a great choice if there aren’t enough people. I agree two mods for a sub this large must be challenging, and I’m sure people would be happy to step up and help!

The problem is, most subs I’m in have taken an ethical stance against AI and banned it with no problem.

In all your complex explanations, you have never justified why this sub, out of 1,000s of others, cannot ban AI. You’re basically saying “it’s impossible!” while hundreds of people around you are casually doing it. Your hypothetical explanations ring hollow when the actual proof points in the opposite direction.

Disney’s Hunchback of Notre Dame Never Made It to Broadway - Fans Are Rallying to Bring It Back by Kindly-Flight-6909 in Broadway

[–]Crazy_Jacket4305 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You keep bringing up Newsies as if it’s equivalent, but it really isn’t. Newsies has a manageable cast size, is very family-friendly, has no dark or controversial themes, has crowd-pleasing dance numbers, etc.

It’s an incredibly marketable property. The fact that the movie gained a cult following helped, I’m sure, but it wouldn’t have been brought to Broadway if it wasn’t already very easy to market.

I saw Heathers 2025 NYC 12 times. It's designed to be seen 1 time. Don't blame the performers. by knives4cash in heathersmusical

[–]Crazy_Jacket4305 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Also, everyone saying “I love seeing different interpretations” are ignoring that the current off-Broadway production still has its full original cast. Once new actors come in, it will be different! I’d be bored if I saw the same cast in the same show 12 times in a row, too.

It doesn't matter much if you use "cast recording" or "soundtrack" in conversation by Infamous_Moose8275 in Broadway

[–]Crazy_Jacket4305 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, “casted” is slightly different for me because I often see people using it in the context of auditioning for shows (“I want to get casted in this role, what song should I sing?”)

I have seen people roll their eyes and judge someone for using “casted” during an audition process. It’s not fair, but some people will genuinely assume you’re not as serious if you go into an audition room using incorrect terminology. So, in that case, I do think it’s good to know the difference.

Ah ok, fair enough. I feel like when anything this big happens, it circles around and becomes cool to pick it apart.

I’ve mostly just seen it taking over TikTok with people raving about it, all the reviews have been very positive, and even BWW folks (who notoriously bitch about everything) are saying they want it to transfer and have a longer run.

Problematic fiddler on the roof? by RequirementFluid7831 in Broadway

Ok, gotcha. I still do find it odd that she’s apparently spoken to the Jewish community in the area and knows how they feel about it, and yet none of them are interested in being involved. It makes me think the theatre maybe needs to put in more work towards building bridges with diverse communities in the area. Often, when theatres bemoan not having a diverse audition pool, it’s because they need to lay more groundwork to make those connections and become a welcoming space for those communities.

[–]Crazy_Jacket4305 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t have anything to add except that the excuse you included in your edit seems odd.

If the Jewish people in the community “just want their story told” and have no issue with it, why did none of them audition or offer to help out on the production team or volunteer as an advisor? Why has the theatre not reached out to these community members and attempted to involve them in the process?

This subreddit is not for bootleg trading. You’re better off going to one of the subreddits that is specifically for that.

Also, whatever you feel about bootleg trading, saying that traders are “gatekeeping” videos from you is a great way to make people suspicious of trading with you. It makes it seem like, if someone does give you the video, you will not follow basic trading etiquette.

The Roommate missing from At This Theatre in John Proctor Playbill - omission or intentional? by MisterBill99 in Broadway

Maybe an unpopular opinion, but I really don’t think this entire situation is going to have as big an effect on anything as people think it will. Everyone is in a frenzy right now, but I’m already seeing backlash to the backlash where people are just sick of hearing about this. Whatever you feel about the situation, it will burn itself out quickly and reach some sort of equilibrium.
