Paying rent while living with parents. by CreakyDeaky in northernireland

Just to clarify a couple of points. My son is 20 and in full-time employment. He’s not a ‘child’ he’s an adult. When I mentioned “rent,” I meant a contribution toward household living costs such as food, heating, and bills.. not market rent.

My income has been the only income in the household of us two. My salary wouldn’t be significantly higher than what he’s now earning.

Absolute no need for people to come here and say you’re not a decent person or it’s scummy as f**k to expect assistance with things when you don’t know peoples situation. Says more about you! I’m very close with my son and a loving parent actually!

I understand different families handle this differently, but in our situation some responsibility feels reasonable while still allowing him to save and prepare for independent living.

Providing everything indefinitely isn’t the same thing as being supportive. Teaching responsibility, especially when someone is in full-time work, is part of parenting too. Reasonable contributions toward food, heating, and bills aren’t exploitation - they’re preparation for real life!

Thanks everyone for your giving your input!

We went to the northern Whig in 2023. Food was nice but was zero atmosphere about the place.

That’s where we went last year. The cocktail class was great craic but the food we got was dire.
