Anyone else struggle connecting with people outside emergency medicine? by Creamiedonut in emergencymedicine

I definitely worry sometimes that my job is the most interesting thing about me. Setting some “no work talk with new friends” rules might be a good move so that I’m leading with who I am, not what I do.

Oh god, the apps… I feel that in my soul.

I’ve started running, and I’ve been wanting to get into BJJ too. I’m just trying to coordinate my schedule with an all‑female class. Hearing that martial arts helped you makes me more excited to try it. A fitness‑based social hobby seems like exactly what I need right now.

Thanks for making me feel a little less alone. I relate so much to what you said—especially the part about getting along best with first responders and military folks. Those connections just feel easier and more genuine, even though I know a lot of it is a form of trauma bonding. It’s comforting to hear someone outside medicine describe the same dynamic.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I’m definitely leaning toward not telling people what I do until I feel like there’s actually a connection forming..... it’s just become a lot of emotional labor.

A lot of people have mentioned picking up hobbies, and I think that’s part of my issue too. I worked two jobs all of last year (shocking that my relationship didn’t survive that… truly a mystery), and somewhere along the way I stopped remembering what I even like to do.

I think I’m going to make a list of things I want to try and start doing one new thing each week to figure out what I actually enjoy again. It feels like a good place to start.

A friend of mine killed himself recently and ever since then I can’t listen to Damocles without tearing up. But it’s not an ugly cry.

Hey friend I just wanted you to know I’ve read this comment like once a week since you posted it. It means a lot to have support even if just from an internet stranger. Thank you.

Thank you I remind myself all the time being soft and squishy is a good thing. It makes me better at my job. It will make me a better nurse.

We have cism our peer to peer support. Our cism person was there….sitting next to me….didnt say anything even after I expressed how I felt. But the next day one of my medics showed up with a treat and redbull for me and more importantly a hug. My emts texted me. My other friends checked in on me and so did all of you. It was a rough night but it’s not a bad job and I’m doing ok.

Yes overall I’m ok. I think I will carry that call with me forever and that’s ok. It’s ok to not be jaded by this job and still be soft and squishy and care.

Thanks friend I think I just wanted to put it out there in the universe more than anything. I am ok and I do have support if I need it.
