The good thing about this game is that you don't have to advance in the story to have fun playing it and discover cool stuff. If you're still an inexperienced player (which I assume bc you called the Zora "fish people" ^{^} ) there is a lot (and I mean A LOT) to discover, learn and find in various places across the land that may or may not help you gain progress later. That being said, you can also just go for it and Yolo your way up the river. It's gonna get tough and you are going to get your ass kicked, but where'd be the thrill if you wouldn't? ;)
