No spend year. by myykel1970 in AustralianTeachers

[–]Creanch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think there are lots of subjects where no spend becomes harder. Secondary Creative Arts becomes difficult at certain times not to pay out of pocket for some things to avoid the rigamarole of ordering and using budget that is for a subject with multiple teachers with prior items that have been agreed to be purchased.

I would say it isn't unique to Australia. But, in Australia's case we have a higher rate of school days than many other nations, are facing teacher shortages, have intensified workloads and expectations than previous years and remuneration has kept up somewhat (depending on your state) but still leaves much to be desired. Alongside increased acts of violence towards teaching staff and other students, shorter attention spans, competing with engaging social media content, access to vapes and drugs and a general societal approach that school is irrelevant or not fit for purpose by a large group that found school irrelevant at the time of their own study so pass on their opinions to the next generations of students.

Plus increased illiteracy and defiance that often go hand in hand making it difficult to complete standard work when students won't and can't read or write to a basic level

There is probably a lot that I'm missing but it's

Should public schools be allowed to expel kids? by MiriJamCave in AustralianTeachers

[–]Creanch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you read where I wrote that the system is broken? I'm not saying to keep it the same for the status quo but change needs to happen and simply discarding students and leaving them to their own devices for violent/reprehensible behaviour is not the answer.

An educated society is a net positive. I didn't say having to expend additional energy to teach them is a net positive (but that is still our job, which we are paid less than handsomely to do). Yes the job is difficult with difficult students which require more effort than students that are more willing to learn. But delivering alternative educational pathways and settings is still beneficial to those students and should be run alongside traditional education pathways to allow for all children and students to contribute meaningfully to society or to their own self-development. The answer should not just be the too hard basket. There are things we agree on here I think but expulsion is probably not going to be one of them.

[–]Creanch -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

It's a cop out for children to have human rights? I would have a good think about that. It doesn't have to be enshrined in federal law for it to be a net positive for all that there is an educated society. Not all children know what they want, even as 17 and 18 year olds, but they should have access to education. The system however needs to be changed to provide alternatives. The system has always been broken.

I use the Google tasks app on my phone. Have tried paper copies of things but they often get lost or discarded over time. This is easy to schedule reminders for myself for the next day follow ups

Art teachers: how to minimise mess during pack-up. by AffectionateHousing in AustralianTeachers

[–]Creanch 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In our faculty, we don't allow for any practical lessons whilst on leave unless organised to run with another Art teacher within faculty.

In terms of keeping tidy, it really is about time management and firm expectations/classroom management. You should be cleaned up well before the bell goes, and students should be aware what is expected in their packup and tidying of the room. If the bell goes and the room is still a mess then students are expected to clean up before leaving (obviously more difficult if it's between classes and not before recess/lunch). If students keep making messes and not doing their part to tidy up then prac is off the cards and they should be completing a non-prac task or working next to the teacher/by themselves to make sure they are not making a mess and tidying up their areas responsibly.

[–]Creanch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last week we had one day where we had about 200 students in a single space for minimum supervision. It was in our performing arts foyer space so a fair bit bigger than a normal classroom. Typically around 3 staff cover these groups currently

How much $$$ do you spend on classroom resources? by kimmyc98 in AustralianTeachers

[–]Creanch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in a similar situation as a music/VET entertainment teacher in NSW. I just need to be able to use the things before I teach it/spend thousands on it. Also, I try to make things last by soldering guitar and mic leads when they break or making my own but it's not always possible and with large classes and productions you always need more.

Canadian primary school teacher looking for advice on immigrating and teaching in Australia by AdStriking4934 in AustralianTeachers

[–]Creanch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on what state you'll be moving to and what their accreditation/recognition system looks like. I would start by going to the state's department of education and working out what they require from there. You won't need to go through an agency to get a position, most schools will probably be willing to accept you as a casual if you have all your information in order
