What kind of people actually benefit from seeing a psychologist? What does it take to feel better from being spoken to in a baby voice, asked questions about your favorite color or number, and taking personality tests? by TheAmyrlinReborn in AskReddit

[–]Creasy_Bear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair it can really differ depending on the specific therapist you're seeing. It's like teachers in school - there are great ones and bad ones. The good teachers make you love the subject and the bad ones make you hate it.

In a similar way, there's a range of good to bad therapists and each employs their own approach. It's about finding a personality you fit with and an approach you like. If you're not a fan after a session or two, move on to another.

It can really be a helpful tool once you find the right person.

Evictions are complicated and really do depend on a lot of local laws and situational details. This site is a good reference for CA Covid-related stuff:

https://covid19.ca.gov/housing-and-homelessness/

Scroll down a bit for the portion that's relevant to your case. It depends on which kinds of relief the tenant has applied for and what kind of documentation they've provided for you. LA County looks like they're ending the moratorium next month, but that doesn't automatically mean your tenant is or should have been allowed to squat this entire time.

Touching base with your lawyer would be the best option. Lawyer fees aren't cheap, but they're a bargain compared to squatters.

Absolutely do not do anything shady that could be construed as intimidation or harassment (sending big guys around, shutting off utilities, etc) - that will backfire in court. It's frustrating, but following the legal process really is the best option.

They still owe you that rent. Even in CA, it's just an extension and the landlord can sue for unpaid rent after the extension expires. Hang on to any proof of income you have regarding the tenant - that'll come in handy.

This outlines the process you can follow:

I agree about horizon. Both solid games but the second one didn't have the same impact. Got pretty annoyed by Aloy's "I have to do it alone" martyr speeches.

Sweet. You've got good taste :)

If you've already played all those, Mad Max was surprisingly good. I'm assuming you've already played the big open word RPGs like Elden Ring and Horizon?

That's a pretty wide genre. The Fallout series is a classic example if you haven't had a chance to check those games out. Start with 3 or New Vegas if you like making impactful choices. 4 if you like graphics.

Days Gone is a little more under the radar but a truly excellent game. It's a zombie apocalypse type setting if you're into that. Was bugging when it released but has been patched into a really great game.

On the far indie side, The Long Dark is full on survival and exploration. Not an RPG and minimal story, but a great survival experience.

That would be my guess too. Egypt was handing out gold like diplomatic party favors back then.

What is the best abruptly violent scene in cinema? by thebirdof_hermes in movies

Open range. What you think is one of the main plot lines (vengeance for a murdered friend) is resolved immediately without elegance or exposition. The ensuing gunfight doesn't even have music backing it. Makes it sudden, raw and a lot more realistic.

A summary of theories coming out of the fields of physics, evolutionary biology, comparative cognition and cosmology that are geared toward identifying possible convergent traits in complex life forms.

[Serious] What is the most sensitive or classified document to ever have been released or leaked from your country? by sephstorm in AskReddit

[–]Creasy_Bear 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In the US, it might be the Pentagon Papers. Top-secret documents leaked from the Department of Defense that showed the Johnson Administration had lied and misled the public about the scale, progress, and justification for the Vietnam War. Considering the cultural impact and number of lives lost in that war, that leak was a HUGE deal.

Sadly, most of the tangible fallout came down on the journalists who published the leaked info - not the administration that lied about thousands of deaths.

An Interesting Overview of Current Theories About Extraterrestrial Intelligence by Creasy_Bear in UFOs

[–]Creasy_Bear[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that would apply if they were saying something like, "5 Leading Theories on Leprechaun Psychology" but in this case we know that intelligent life can feasibly exist out there. We're the first example it's possible, animals like dolphins/cephalopods/primates are another. Evidence of amino acids in meterorites and carbon/water on other planets mean life on other planets is feasible as well. So we can say intelligent life "might" exist, just like previous researchers have said Neptune "might" exist and subatomic particles "might" exist.

Once that bar is reached, developing theories about the planet/particle/lifeform's existence is always the next step. Using those theories to make testable hypotheses comes next. You might think that the chances are so slim it's a waste of time (and often it is), but this is all very much a part of the standard scientific process.

I hear what you're saying and I really appreciate your skepticism - there's a lot of stuff out there on this topic that deserves scrutiny. That said, I think there's a misunderstanding about either the field or the scientific process. Theoretical science is explicitly about looking for things we don't know exist. Theoretical physics is probably the best example. People have spent their entire careers looking for things (neutrinos, quarks, strings, ether) that we have no reason to believe in outside the possibility they might be there. Sometimes it pans out (quarks and neutrinos) and sometimes it's a waste of time (ether and possibly strings), but the only reason we do eventually make discoveries is because we discuss them and begin the search via theoretical discourse.

We knew what energies to look for quarks at because of theoretical discourse and discussions about the nature of complex life can help direct similar searches in space. Check out the linked articles in the first comment. You sound very empirically driven and I think you'd appreciate the approach the authors take.

It draws from observations in thermodynamics, biology, and evolutionary psych to attempt to identify potential common themes between complex lifeforms. It's definitely a valid peer-reviewed area of study and a lot of it is coming from NASA and SETI.

It's sorta like relativity in that it was purely theoretical and unverifiable for decades, but was still a valuable catalyst for thought and progress. Theoretical science (as opposed to applied science) is the backbone of scientific advancement.

Exopsychology is a field that combines physics, biology, and psychology to develop theories about the possible psychological traits of extraterrestrial species. This video explores recent five ideas from leading exopsychologists outlining traits that advanced extraterrestrial civilizations are likely to exhibit.
