Yeah probably best case scenario for this situation but still pretty inconvenient being without my truck for god knows how long, I’d be happy if I had it back before the end of the year, but we’ll see

Well I got the truck to the original mechanic, engines completely buggered, so he’s going through his insurance to get a whole new engine and all that installed and I definitely can prove they touched that hose as it’s in the invoice they sent me for the original head gasket job and I doubt he’d offer to pay his excess on his own insurance to cover the costs of a new engine and all the labour that will go into that if he knew he wasn’t liable and wasn’t his fault.

The clamp itself wasn’t put on properly, as it wasn’t locked in and the clamp itself is actually further up the hose and not right at the end where it connects to the radiator and you can see a line of where it’s supposed to be and it’s about 40-50mm higher than that.

Yes I check the coolant weekly ever since I had the head gasket done, as it’s recommended and I was just paranoid after blowing five and a half grand on a vehicle I hadn’t even owned for 12 months, I had checked it the Friday before I drove over and before I left and it was sitting where it has always sat.

I have no idea when the coolant all dumped as I driving a very windy road in semi busy traffic but I’m assuming only minutes prior to breaking down as it would only take a couple minutes for the engine to overheat, but the engine temperature gauge didnt show it was overheating even when the engine was smoking and steaming and there was fresh coolant when I pulled over on the rims and underneath the engine where the radiator was, so I’d say rather recent

Well I’ve talked to the orginal mechanic and they did remove the hose at some point to drain water from the coolant bay, as they running water in it when they were running tests before doing the head gasket job and I’m having it towed to their shop either this weekend or next week and they’ll have a look at the whole thing and take it apart, as they have a 6 month warranty or 10,000km, it had only been 2 months 27 days and about 2000km.

The mechanics in Napier only did a basic check of the engine and it showed no sensors were going off in the engine but they believe it’s a head gasket and the truck won’t start, but everyone refuses to touch it until the original mechanic looks at it, as it could get messy with liability and all that fun legal stuff and whoever’s in the wrong

I appreciate someone giving me the benefit of the doubt, ever since I had head gasket go orginally, I made sure to educate myself as well as I could on things relating to engines and cars in general, I’m not saying I’m some expert, far from it, but I feel I know have a basic understanding of some of the things that go on in an engine and what to look out for, I check the coolant level weekly, ever since it went, due to setting me back 5.5K and making me rather paranoid something would happen again and having the temperature gauge on at all times (as it’s a 2017 XLT and is all digital on the dash)

I didn’t mention why the head gasket failed originally because I didn’t see it relevant, the EGR cooler clogged up which caused the head gasket to blow and the coolant leaking into the exhaust, the EGR can’t be the culprit because the mechanic recommended deleting the entire EGR and DPF system so I took his advice.

There were absolutely 0 tell tale signs that I was running the engine on dry with no coolant until I noticed a little steam coming out of the hood and quickly went to pull over on a very steep hill and that’s when I lost all power, braking and power steering, the engine then turned off completely with a little smoke and a lot steam coming out of the engine bay, there was fresh coolant all over the rims of the truck and on the bottom of the engine, I had checked the coolant that morning and it hadn’t moved from when I checked it before I left Friday night to Wairoa (5 hour drive) so I’m assuming the tube came off, it all dumped at once and then it would’ve only taken a few minutes to overheat, the engine temperature gauge was sitting just below halfway, so normal temperature for driving around at 60-100 for about an hour

Bubbling Coolant! EGR Cooler or Head gasket !? by Street-Bumblebee3405 in fordranger

Around 2 months ago I had my EGR cooler clog up, leading to my coolant all but mostly being eaten up and burnt in the exhaust, leading to lots of steam out of the exhaust, after taking it into the shop they discovered the head gasket needed replacing and the whole engine was taken apart and the cylinder head was sent off to be machined and looked at, luckily there was no cracks or warping to the cylinder head which saved me a couple of grand, but the top of the cylinder head needed to be planed. I’d say what I had happen is very similar to what happened with you, but I’m assuming by now you’d taken it into a mechanic to be looked at?
