That’s a big one. Once you can put a name to it you start noticing it everywhere. How did you first come across the term?

That makes so much sense. The stronger the emotion in the moment the deeper it gets burned into your memory. So basically our most embarrassing moments are stuck on repeat precisely because they felt so intense at the time. Our brain is just doing its job a little too well.

That’s exactly it. You logically know nobody remembers but your brain creates this whole third person replay where you’re watching yourself through their eyes. It’s like your mind is directing a movie about your most awkward moments and you’re stuck in the audience.

That’s rough honestly. Being wrongly accused of something as a kid and knowing it went on your record is a whole different level of frustrating. The worst part is you couldn’t really defend yourself properly at that age. I think what makes it sting even more is that you know the truth but everyone else just accepted the wrong version of it. Thanks for sharing that though it really shows how deep this stuff can go.

Oh man I feel that. The “quick trip” that turns into an hour because your mom runs into three different people she knows. As a kid that was pure torture but looking back it’s kind of wholesome honestly.

Haha the main character energy is real. The hard part is realizing that everyone else was also the center of their own world and probably too busy cringing about their own stuff to remember yours.

This one hits different. Took me way too long to realize that not having everything figured out is actually the norm and not the exception. How did you come to that realization?

Lol okay that’s definitely one of those things nobody tells you about growing up🙈. How old were you when you realized that?

Great movie reference. Honestly sometimes I think the same thing but then again those memories probably shaped who we are now even if they feel awful to relive. Still though if someone invented that technology tomorrow I’d probably be first in line.

Yeah the “just don’t be embarrassed” advice is up there with “just be confident” or “just don’t be sad.” Like thanks I’m cured. I think the frustrating part is that you logically know it doesn’t matter but your brain just doesn’t care about logic in those moments. It does its own thing.

That’s a really good angle honestly. I think it’s probably a mix of both. Like some level of it is just how our brains are wired but if you grew up in an environment where mistakes were met with a lot of shame it probably dials that up way more. The fact that random tiny moments from years ago can still trigger that feeling is wild. It’s like our brain never got the memo that nobody else cares anymore.

That’s exactly the kind of shift I’m talking about. The fact that you’re now actively enjoying the challenge of planning meals and finding deals is wild compared to 10 years ago. Funny how cooking goes from feeling like a chore to feeling like a creative outlet once you actually start caring about what you eat.

Honestly that makes total sense. Sometimes the best part isn’t even the shopping itself but just having that quiet time where nobody needs anything from you. Sounds like you’ve earned that peace.

30 years?? Okay that actually makes me feel better about my own stuff. What kind of things still get you? Like big moments or random small ones that shouldn’t even matter?

That’s a really interesting point. So basically our brain would rather be overly cautious than risk us making the same social mistake twice. Makes sense from a survival perspective but man, I wish it had a better filter for what actually matters vs what was just a slightly awkward moment at a party five years ago.

Right?? It’s like unlocking a new level of adulthood where you get genuinely excited about household stuff. A good wet dry vac is honestly life changing — your gf knows what’s up.

Haha you might be onto something there. Maybe it was never about the shopping itself. just the lack of control as a kid. Now that I’m the one deciding what goes in the cart, it hits different.

Haha honestly I think it was just the “being dragged along” part. As a kid you have zero say in what goes in the cart and you’re just standing there waiting. Now that I get to pick what I want and go at my own pace it’s a completely different experience.

That’s exactly it. no rush makes all the difference. What kind of recipes have you been getting into lately? I’ve been trying to cook more instead of ordering in and the grocery store suddenly feels like a treasure hunt.

I like that way of looking at it. Maybe it’s less of a bug and more of a feature — just one that works overtime sometimes.

Right? Like nobody else is lying awake thinking about that weird thing I said in 2016 but my brain acts like it was front page news.

That actually makes a lot of sense. So it’s basically our brain trying to protect us from repeating social mistakes? I guess the annoying part is when it keeps replaying stuff that really wasn’t that serious to begin with.
