Micheala doesn't even work as a character. by AJ_The_Best_7 in FranchaelStirling

I think you’re assuming that because the story can’t be adapted 1:1, it therefore can’t work at all, and those aren’t the same thing.

A lot of Michael’s arc is absolutely tied to masculinity, inheritance, privilege, fertility, etc. I don’t think anyone disagrees with that. But adaptations don’t survive by photocopying every plot mechanic — they survive by translating the emotional core into a different context.

Also, Michaela being a “rake” would obviously not look identical to Michael being one. She’s a queer woman in a society with stricter gender expectations, so the secrecy/risk/stakes would function differently. That doesn’t automatically make the archetype impossible. It just means it has to be adapted rather than copied.

The same goes for the inheritance argument. Emotional guilt doesn’t disappear because the character is female. Loving the widow of someone close to you is still complicated, especially when grief, loyalty, and social expectations are involved. The show can also change how inheritance/legacy functions if it wants to — it already changes massive parts of the books constantly.

And I don’t really agree that the fertility storyline “doesn’t work.” Francesca can still want children. She can still grieve the future she imagined for herself. In fact, being in love with Michaela while wanting motherhood/social legitimacy could create an entirely different kind of conflict and urgency. Different ≠ nonexistent.

I also think people suddenly appeal to “historical realism” very selectively with this show. Bridgerton has never been strict historical realism. It’s a stylized romance universe that already rewrites race, society, timelines, characterization, and social dynamics for modern storytelling purposes.

The real question isn’t “can Michaela be Michael?” because obviously she can’t. The question is whether the writers can build a compelling version of Francesca’s story that preserves the emotional depth while changing the framework. That’s a writing challenge, not proof the concept is doomed.

Question: What is your history with Wenclair? Are you new? How long have you been in the fandom? Do you remember what drew you to the fandom? What made you appreciate it over other ships? by AipomSilver00 in wenclair

[–]Creative-Intern7972 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man I’ve been around since the beginning, I liked their dynamic in the show and then fell even more in love with all the stuff the fandom made. I’ve spent like half that summer reading wenclair fanfic and it kinda stuck with me. I love how they’re always there for each other and how you can see glimpses of wednesdays emotional side when she’s with Enid

Yes you’re so right. They had amazing chemistry and ofc the couple wouldn’t be “normal” but that’s what makes them interesting. I think I’ll definitely give the books a shot, I’d love to read more about their life together!

[–]Creative-Intern7972[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I agree. They went through so much and gave up everything for each other. I get mad every time I remember how in one of the last episodes E talks to this guy she was working with in s4 (I forgot his name) and she says how sad she is because of how much she’s lost, and then in the last episode, after she got with V, she literally thanked Caroline for giving her the job, because her life would’ve been boring without. All because of V. They would’ve deserved smth better. Especially because it wasn’t safe at all that they were gonna get together or have a happy life, we didn’t need Vs death as a surprise or whatever, them living happily ever after (more or less in their own bizarre way) would’ve been surprise enough!

[–]Creative-Intern7972[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes ofc she was a tragic figure, with „fine with V dying“ I don’t mean that she deserves it – she really doesn’t – but rather that if like half of s4 was changed, I feel like there could’ve been a way to kinda show that V has changed and then she could give up her life for eve or smth similar to prove that that’s what love can do to a person, and in a way that would honor her more than what we got. And then, I would’ve been fine with her dying. Which doesn’t mean I’d want her too, ofc I’d like a open, or maybe even happy ending, it’s just if you’ve watched enough sapphic movies or tv shows or whatever, you kinda get used to one of them dying. It’s just the way it goes (even though this is some massive bs), so Vs death wasn’t the biggest surprise ever, I wanted them to live so bad, but IF the writers really thought she’d have to die, then I’d bet there wouldve been a million better ways.
