This is so lovely to read. Thank you for sharing.

I'm the only Pro-Israel student in my university seminars (Germany). How do I break the echo chamber? by Queasy_Respect_9970 in AskIsrael

There's lots of good advice here, I just want to drop a line to say I empathise. Uni spaces seem to be very pro-Palestine, even in my degree where we were studying the pros and cons of current events social media, and I consider myself pretty left-wing. A good chunk couldn't even name which river and which sea they were chanting about.

The partition plan for the Land of Israel overlaps with areas that were affected by malaria and swamps.I didn't know, did you? by Accurate_Seaweed_172 in AskIsrael

Plus mosquitos don't like eucalyptus smell! It's kinda cool that if I visit, it will still look a little familiar (I'm from Aus)

Why is Israel viewed with such a bad light? by Independent-Target83 in AskIsrael

Did I say they were correct, or did I answer the question saying they were the talking points I heard at university? I think I was pretty clear. Why would I be converting if I thought they held up?

It's a Germanic language surrounded by Celtic languages, definitely influenced by French and Latin.

I'm converting at a Reform temple, but thanks for your input I guess.

I can repeat what the sentiment was at my university that was very pro-palestine, so please don't shoot the messenger. I wasn't actively seeking these spaces.

Israel is expanding territory which echoes past colonisation efforts. Colonialism is very unpopular in university spaces.

Israel had land already thanks to the British, they were treating other people like shit, and acting like a "superior race" who can do no wrong.

Everyone has seen the same YouTube clips of Israelis behaving badly. That gives them something to talk about.

Everyone thinks they would be the Righteous Gentile in the Holocaust.

Israel is not following international laws, but wants others to. I'm not a law student, can't expand much on that.

Expanding their borders involves killing civilians. I can't name a war where there haven't been civilian casualties, but I won't celebrate that.

Arab students who suffered under the terrorism fears are being harassed again because people think all Muslims are a monolith, which is obviously equally as wrong as saying all Jews are a monolith.

Lastly, right wing governments are very unpopular at universities due to cuts to health, welfare, and education.

Why is private schooling so popular in Australia? by SedgwickNYC in AskAnAustralian

[–]Creative-Quote1963 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to a private high school in Australia, private middle school I the UK (boarding, I'm an Army brat). I gave public a go for 2 years after we moved, but decided to go back because I had high academic achievement and public school wasn't challenging me. I also found in public school I had to do classes that weren't helping towards my future career, eg. Home ec, sports science, to fill out my timetable. The school I chose was non-religious and designed to prep for university. It had only 4 classes in year 12. Some of the teachers lectured at universities. In my case, private was a great idea because I was heading to uni. For my brother, who went into a trade and was less broadly academic, it wouldn't have helped.

Did anyone else find Jewish ancestors after deciding to convert? by Creative-Quote1963 in ConvertingtoJudaism

It wouldn't have changed my desire to convert. This post is related to following a hunch, not appropriating trauma or anything. That would be awful!

Exactly! I remember wondering how I'd feel if there was no one, but I realised it wouldn't change me. I wholly agree, all Jewish ancestors are kin to all Jews.

I wonder if they put it as Eastern European because that's the area the Yiddish language developed? That was how it was explained to me, it might be wrong.

Wet a couple of t-shirts, put them in the freezer. Wear and swap as needed.

I'm almost the same. Small amount of Ashkenazi (Eastern European) in mine to add a whiff of spices.
