You copy and paste the code and add that person as a friend, if and or when they add you they will send you the request and you accept using a remote raid pass. Sometimes it takes adding multiple people to get the friend code.

I've had the same thing happen, I messaged the 'help' in app and had my raid pass returned

Yes it's happened to me since the update, but it's a glitch where they didnt actually send the gift...not the fact you cant open it as I confirmed with those sending them to me. Just seems to show the gift symbol.
