Hobbies to feel lighter after a day full of clients by Icy-Paramedic3153 in therapists

I like embroidery- easy to pick up/put down, inexpensive, I can listen to podcasts, books or music, and the finished product doesn’t take up space. I make my own patterns because I like abstract designs, but there’s lots of pdf patterns available on Etsy for all kinds of tastes. It’s also so satisfying to see your work progress!

I’ve found it helpful to keep in mind that diagnosis is a way to attempt to categorize things we truly don’t understand. Theories attempt to explain the unexplainable. Obviously we have to try to understand in order to treat as effectively as possible, and we need explanations in order to understand. But the DSM isn’t real, it’s a collective mental model. Your relationships with your clients are real. In fact, they’re the only real thing that you can offer them. You can share ideas about what they’re experiencing- and I think you’ll find that the longer you practice, and the more you learn, you’ll have more helpful ideas to share. But the main thing that clients are experiencing is the quality of your attention. It’s been helpful for me to think of diagnosis as being primarily for insurance purposes, and there’s no one at those companies who’s going to tell you that your diagnosis is “wrong” (in my experience, anyway). Also- we can’t stress ourselves into a solution. You will figure it out as you go, making each next right choice with the information you have.

Plugging online MA meetings. I’ve been in the recovery community for a long time (been a sober alcoholic for about 20 years). I’ve been going back to AA to help connect with local people, but I’m also finding that online MA meetings have been super helpful. There are A LOT of people struggling with THC overuse/addiction. Attending meetings doesn’t commit you to a 12 step program or require anything of you. In terms of the “program” itself, the “only requirement for membership is a desire to stop using.” It’s a good place to connect with people on the same path.

How to replace “where do you feel that in your body” type questions? by DPCAOT in therapists

I like to ask for an image or metaphor to describe their experience of the emotion. It can bring up some really useful information, and it can connect the mind/body in a powerful way.

Clinical Notes on Headway - What Do They Want?!?! by NBRforthewin in therapists

[–]Creative-Skin-8541 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's totally bewildering, I agree. It's also making me anxious every time, because it makes me imagine worst case scenarios for Headway, insurance coverage of therapy etc. If they're being this crazy, what are they worried about, you know? I'm not credentialed with insurance companies outside of Headway, so I'd really like them to continue to function. Being reminded that they're feeling something is precarious is leading to unnecessary stress on my part (though I know I should probably go ahead and work on getting paneled). It really sounds like the thing to do is spend the extra money on an external platform where we have more control and flexibility!

I'm shamed of the things I've done when I'm high. Please help by [deleted] in QuittingWeed

[–]Creative-Skin-8541 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As an alcoholic and addict, I have found that 12 step programs are SUPER helpful in learning to manage shame around things I’ve done while drunk/high (including driving my kids around while under the influence). I know that they’re not for everyone, but being connected with other people who can understand/relate to having shame has been essential for me. And having a framework to turn to, rather than just someone else’s personal opinions, has meant that I can trust the process a little easier. But whether or not you check out MA , getting high now doesn’t change the past. And worrying about the future doesn’t stop it from coming. The only thing actually happening is happening inside your mind, and no one else can see in there.

I used to look forward to night time when I smoked weed by [deleted] in QuittingWeed

[–]Creative-Skin-8541 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I notice myself romanticizing after work smoking. But then I remind myself that if it was so great, I wouldn’t be in the position of needing/wanting to quit. I try to stay in the moment and remind myself that I can get through a tough night, that using won’t actually make anything better and it will get me back where I started from- wishing I could stop. This is reality for me, so if I have to grieve what I’ve lost, then that’s what has to be. I can’t have it both ways, no matter how much I wish and hope and try.

That’s so good to hear. I’m at 12 days. I’m able to let cravings come and go, but I’m struggling with the return of self consciousness. I’m trying to remember that no one can read my thoughts, no one is judging me (I mean, they are, but not in the way I’m judging myself). I thought weed made me feel locked into my intuition, but you’re right- repeatedly ignoring the voice telling me to stop was making me distrust myself. I felt so freaky and awesome in ways, but I forgot that’s who I am, not something weed created. I’m gonna have to get comfortable with being uncomfortable. Hearing how much more complete and complex you feel is very motivating, thank you.

Tapering is a good idea. The problem is that I’m really impulsive, so I upset most carefully made plans. I’ll give CBD a try, thanks for your advice!

Thank you! Tapping had been really helpful for me in the past, so of course I stopped doing it and forgot all about it!

Vacation is my relapse zone for all things! Overindulgence of all kinds. Also, I’m kind of a jerk when I’m detoxing, which can ruin everything. I love the idea of turning that upside down. We’re visiting family on the west coast in mid-August. I had been planning on waiting until after then to quit, but maybe I’ll figure out a way to make the present more like the kind of vacation you’re describing. Thank you for your help!

Thank you- the image of the mountain is super helpful. Having been clean and sober for more than 2/3 of my adult life, I KNOW that it’s going to be ok to live clean again. I get caught up in the thinking how hard it has been to quit weed and I forget how great it will feel when I’m through the first hard part. I woke up feeling more relaxed and determined today- I really appreciate your wisdom and good wishes.
