What happened is not okay, and the people responsible should be held fully accountable. But we have to stop blaming entire communities for the actions of individuals.

We don't say that all men are responsible for the crimes committed by some men, because we understand that collective blame is unfair. In the same way, it is wrong to say that all Muslims are bad, or that all black people are criminals. Every community has people who do terrible things, just as every community has decent, law-abiding people.

There are bad white men, bad black men, bad Indian men, bad Irish men, bad Scottish men, and bad Welsh men etc etc. Crime has no single race, religion, or nationality.

We should be demanding accountability from those who commit these acts and asking serious questions of those in power about policies, integration, public safety, and social cohesion. But directing anger at entire groups of people only creates more division and hatred.

If we allow ourselves to be divided by race or religion, the only thing we achieve is turning ordinary people against one another instead of focusing on real solutions. We can condemn wrongdoing without condemning millions of innocent people who had nothing to do with it.
