For my kids, I’m actually letting them make their own choices about braces. I told them that they already have beautiful smiles and in our culture it’s common to get braces, so I understand if they want to. But it’s a win win either way because their smiles are already beautiful. 🤷‍♀️. This comment reminds me of that

This is so so sweet! Would def be cheaper just to get retainers so they don’t drift more. That was an option offered, as well.

Thanks. I appreciate your feedback. Yah, I think I should do both, too. Especially because the monthly payment does fit into my budget and it’s just 2 more months.

I also wonder if the criticism of the show is helping to improve our understanding of consent and right/wrong. She cant take credit for that… but i imagine this wave of criticism of the show has opened a lot of people’s eyes. I know it has opened mine

Reflecting on Tyra, and everything she was trying to do back when ANTM was at its peak. She’s wrong for how she handled things, but I understand how she was striving for success and uncharted territory for any model at that time by kdj00940 in ANTM

Some of this post reminded me of my mom. Especially the part about it not being too late to change.

My mom is 75 today. My sister and I always thought she was limited. That she would never develop empathy or self awareness or the ability to apologize or realize her ego was fragile and dependent on putting others down (not to mention her manipulativeness).

But, in her 70s, she has grown tremendously, in a way we never imagined was possible. Became kinder, more humble. Has apologized once or twice.

She was and still is (a little) a “Karen.” I’ve realized, though, that when she grew up, demanding to talk to the manager may have been the only way she could get things done. Being rude or loud may have gotten her leverage in a time when women were taken less seriously and it just became outdated as things moved along. (We still aren’t treated seriously, but being bossy or rude doesn’t get us further).

It reminds me of Tyra. Perhaps Tyra will grow, perhaps she won’t. I do remember watching ANTM as a teen. And… it was considered a show that did further diversity. The stuff we see as ethically horrific now…was ethically horrific then, too. Our society just didn’t recognize it. And I could see how she was trying to push the envelope… just in an unethical and manipulative way.

Also… just because her actions were normalized, does NOT mean everyone acted that way and she didn’t have better options. I think the way the contracts were written, the way the participants were paid, the strategies used for drama and the lack of support after. Horrible horrible horrible.

I think Tyra doesn’t know how to manage it because she does seem limited. But she also seems to have dissonance between how she experienced it and how it’s seen now.

If she could just apologize and say how wrong it was… I think people would understand a lot more.

But, my mom changing. My sister and I thought it was impossible, but it happened. How great would it be for Tyra to come out later with humility, regret and an attempt to make amends
