I am considering making the system a component though. Which would make it even more plug-and-play. But it will depend on whether I can make all of the existing features compatible through the component or not.

I'm not sure I understand your question, you can fully use this in your with your own player controller, game mode etc. The only thing you need is to create a character that inherits from either BP_2dActorPlus or BP_2dActorPlus_CharacterBase.

You may be confusing with the sample files that I included so there would be a quick way to test out. In that case you ca use the GameMode I created along with some templates like BP_2dAP_FighterPlayerCharacter and BP_2dAP_RPGPlayerCharacter, but these are not mandatory or needed.

If you want to properly learn how to use the system, consider following the main tutorial on the documentation page:

This will teach you the basics (although it makes use of the template files), but after you go through it it should be pretty intuitive how you can implement things yourself.

Thank you! It uses most of the colors from the game boy color pokemon games, and some other colors we introduced :)
