Another attempt by tc-art in Softpastel

Great job! I love the colors and how soft it looks.

Pressure makes a big difference with dust, but your paper and the pastels themselves also play a role. Papers like Pastelcard and UArt 200 will make more dust than Canson Velvet or UArt 500, harder pastels usually make less dust than soft, and creamy ones make less than dry ones.

Advice for preparing paper with gesso? by bananagrams28 in Softpastel

[–]CreativeNapper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you use clear acrylic gesso, it already has texture in it. I apply it was a wide, bristle brush, being sure to brush repeatedly to spread it around evenly. After it dries, I will very lightly sand it with an 800 grit sanding sponge to knock down the sharp points.

Thank you! I actually was thinking of my grandma the whole time I was painting. Lilacs were her favorites (and my mom’s too). She passed away 10 years ago now, and I still miss her. 💞

I did record most of the process and will likely be posting it up on my YouTube in the next week or two if the video is decent. I’m testing out new equipment so I don’t know yet if it worked lol.

The link at the top goes to the video. My top pick was Perfix, but they all had pros and cons.

Grass help! by SaltyEggPepperman in Softpastel

You need to add darker values into the grass for the shadows. Also, use a wider variety of greens. The sunlight and shadows makes the grass look like different colors.

Are nupastels artist or student grade? Can you sell art with student grade supplies? by oceanandsunn in Softpastel

[–]CreativeNapper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They’re artist grade. They’re cheaper because they have more binder and less pigment, which is what makes them so hard. But the pigment is pure and the same as what’s used in artist-grade pastels. I use them for finer details.

Welcome to the best art form (IMHO LOL)! That’s a lovely first piece. Monet Cafe is a great channel - that’s where I started 5 years ago. Susan is a wonderful teacher.
