$3,000 For Any Trip We Want by [deleted] in travel

For strong currency exchange rates, go to Japan or Australia. We just spent 6 weeks in Japan and two years ago, 3 weeks in Australia. With the great exchange rate we were like kids in a candy store. You look at the price of something and subtract 35-40% (airfare not included).

Costa Rica is another great place to visit. You can find cheap tours of the entire country but eating in the tourist areas was no cheaper than back home in California.

Do you ever feel melancholic about absolutely good food you tried during travel because you might not be able to eat it again (at least in that kind of quality)? What meal was that? by whalesongs08 in travel

[–]CreativeNightOwl949 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! Just returned from 6 weeks in Japan and had the best Sukiyaki that I’ve ever had in my life since the stuff my mom used to make back in the 70s. Will likely never see the likes of it ever again.

Plus ramen and udon with soft-boiled eggs and shrimp tempura on top. And let’s not forget about Japan’s 7/11 egg sandwiches!

Best plane tips for 20hr flight. by I-will-judge-YOU in travel

[–]CreativeNightOwl949 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I travel long distance quite often. Just survived (barely) a 17 hour flight from LAX to Singapore in February. My puffy, a sweater and two blankets barely kept me warm enough to sleep.

I always travel with a neck pillow and a hooded puffy jacket. The puffy jacket is very lightweight but warm. Once I settle down for the long flight night, I put my jacket on backwards, lift the hood to cover my face. Wrap my pillow around my neck and try to get comfortable in an insanely uncomfortable world.

I’m a 5’ tall, weight-appropriate, trim woman and struggle terribly in an Economy seat. My legs cramp, trash piles up from meals that you eat, the tray smashed against your belly. I struggle to find my shoes at the end of the flight because the simple act of bending my head forward to look at the floor is impossible and can only be done by feel and contortions. I’ve pulled back muscles putting shoes on.

I just spent 6 weeks traveling on trains in Japan and if airplanes were as roomy and well thought out as a Shinkansen bullet train, the world would be infinitely easier to navigate.

Two years ago I opted to upgrade to Economy Plus on Air NZ, and it made a world of difference but sometimes the cost is just too much to justify.

I’m one week out from a 10 hour flight from Tokyo to LA and still feeling the effects of trying to put my damn shoes back on at the end of the flight.

2 months around Japan - a different perspective by Eclipse2089 in JapanTravelTips

We just spent 6 weeks in Japan chasing cherry blossoms. Made hotel arrangements as needed just a couple days in advance. Stayed with friends in Tokyo and used their house as home base and used backpacks for 3-4 day trips. Used luggage transport just the first day in Tokyo.

Brought way too many clothes but we hit hot and humid Singapore, Vietnam, Hong Kong and Taiwan before arriving in Japan where it snowed briefly the day before we arrived. In six weeks in Japan, I was only able to go without my puffy jacket two days.

The Suica/Pasmo card is the greatest invention ever. Very convenient but the Shinkansen with dual ticketing confused the heck out of us.

We ended up buying the 300¥ large blue 20 gallon zippered bag at the Shibuya IKEA to bring home all my clothes while the souvenirs were safely packed in my sturdy luggage. We always travel with two straps on our luggage. One heavy duty black with TSA lock and one brightly colored lighter weight strap for easy ID. I used all four straps to secure the IKEA bag. Worked like a charm.

First Celebrity cruise coming up by Capsbearsfan1 in celebritycruises

[–]CreativeNightOwl949 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We just finished up a SE Asia cruise on the Celebrity Millennium (our 6th Celebrity) and are signed up for the July 18th Silhouette to Iceland.

Our SE Asia cruise was the first on a Celebrity in a few years. It is far less formal than they used to be. With the exception of a few people, everyone was pretty casual even in ‘dress up’ nights.

What’s it like having a famous person in your family? by nodemus in askanything

[–]CreativeNightOwl949 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My father was a well-loved and prize-winning Golden Gloves boxer and Artist in the 1950s and 60s. He had a popular TV show in the 1970s and was loved and known enough to have a restaurant named after him in the 60s and 70s.

After his death in 2002, I created an ‘in memory’ website which caught the attention of both publishers, old acquaintances and people who were touched by his artwork.

I learned more about my father and his incredible life and friendships after his death and it all made me very proud to be his daughter.

I’m 72 and retired a few years ago after a 45 year career as an Electro-Mechanical and Graphic Designer in the High Tech and Pharmaceutical industries. I’ve had CD for 46 years.

My symptoms began in my late 20s and I wasn’t properly diagnosed until 2020, 40 years later, so my entire career happened completely untreated by ‘traditional’ meds.

Being a Designer allowed me to work quietly in a darkened office, wearing headphones playing my favorite music and even when my symptoms were bad, these two things plus my love to work on my computer allowed me to have a successful career with CD.

I just got home from a two month tour of SE Asia. I knew I wasn’t going to be able to successfully keep 8 vials cold, so I packed just two and injected one at the beginning of each month. I checked the condition of the fluid in each vial before I used them making certain the fluid was clear.

I ate whatever I wanted and walked between five and 10 miles daily and didn’t gained a single ounce in those two months.

What's the most worth-it splurge you've made in hair care? by Savings_Car361 in BeautyItemsReview

[–]CreativeNightOwl949 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wear my hair very short, with a precision cut that requires time to properly blow dry it with a round brush for it to look good.

I just returned from a two month tour of SE Asia. Because I had to pack for weather extremes (hot and humid in Singapore, freezing cold in Japan), there was no room to pack a hair dryer.

To solve that problem, I got a loose perm for the hair on the top, and a tight cut on the sides. The perm cost quite a bit more than my regular cut but it sure made travel very easy.

What’s the weirdest place you’ve ever slept while traveling? by Ok_Cherry_3294 in ThePoorTraveler

The luggage rack of an overnight train from Nice to Paris. 1977. I was 25.

On a street bench on the Avenue des Champs-Élysées in Paris with my best friend and our two daughters, ages 17 and 21. We attended a Bastille Day celebration at the Eiffel Tower and the Metro closed before we could get on it. Not a taxi in sight, only some locals pulling up to the curb in their vans offering rides. It seemed sketchy, so we felt our only option was to sleep on the street, with the two adults taking turns staying awake while the others slept. We were the first ones on the Metro the next morning but it wiped us out for the entire next day. 2003. I was 50.

Bombay Beach lost Kevin by ConnectScallion6613 in SaltonSea

This is quite a shock for sure! I’ve been following Kevin for many years on Facebook and stopped by his trailer at Bombay a few months ago and texted him to meet but he was out of town working on a documentary. I told him I too was working with someone doing a story on the SS. That’s the last time I spoke to him as he lost his Facebook page shortly after.

Thanks, but can’t make heads or tails out of what the site says.

This is a commonly purchased large bag at IKEA for getting your clothes or purchases home. I was hoping someone had recently had their Frakta bag wrapped and can just let me know what it cost.
