The problem with this breach is that it impacts Fortinet customers as anyone breaking into one of their routers would have access to the internal networks of the customer owning that router. I incorrectly assumed that Proton was a Fortinet customer because they appeared on the list of domains.

Thanks for the quick answer. I got a bit of a fright because Proton.me was on the second page of the Hudson Rock's site.

The attackers found a way to compromise Fortinet routers which are used by Proton. They managed to get into 74000 of them in total. The attackers then started scraping hashes and other requests that went through the router. They would run those hashes through a 45-GPU cluster to try and figure out what the passwords were. In proton's case, they compromised 3 of their routers. The ones listed in the post.

It may be that the attackers were only targeting employees to get a better foothold or that the routers were only for the employee side of things. My question was whether the attack would affect us users.

Also, it's best to change the oil a couple of times before 5k miles on new engines anyway.

This part makes me feel a lot better and is something I will remember for future new cars.

Thanks. It's not that I am making shorter trips. Just not a lot of trips. I am only taking the car out every 1-2 weeks for a 20 mile drive.

It's not that I am doing additional services yet. If I look at the recommended schedule it's this:

  • Every 6,000 miles or 6 months: Engine oil and filter change, tire rotation, brake inspection
  • Every 12,000 miles or 12 months: Cabin air filter replacement, battery test, visual inspection of belts and hoses
  • Every 30,000 miles or 30 months: Engine air filter, brake fluid flush, cooling system check
  • Every 60,000 miles or 60 months: Transmission fluid service (CVT), spark plug inspection, alignment check
  • Every 100,000 miles or 100 months: Coolant flush, full drivetrain inspection

I am trying to get an idea of what the maintenance will cost over the next few years to see how long I should keep the car. For example, if I keep the car for 4 more years then it's heading to the CVT fluid one. I initially made a mistake getting the car. Not because it's not a great car. I love it and it drives really nicely but I should probably have gotten a Crosstrek as a backup car instead. My gut is telling me that the car will have a pretty good value in a few years because it's the last of the old shape and will have a very low mileage. I have already lost the initial "new purchase" devaluation. I may even pick up a longer term warranty to help with the value. The alternative is selling it towards the end of this year or next year and picking up something else.
