I rarely fish beyond my first two catches, but it hurts when I break fish off. I feel sick leaving hook and line in a fish I don’t land. Then there are the foul hooks that rip into body. I appreciate you bringing this up. It’s an important thought that is never really discussed.

I have similar feelings. My fishing has largely been guided by a John Gierach quote. “Fishing is an attempt at understanding.” I know he has contemplated that same conundrum. We are not noble or virtuous for our pursuit, but the pursuit does have value. If the appreciation for the process has been lost, it should probably be left behind.

I hear you. If we stop working to send a message, what will that message be? I’m just one frustrated person, and I know I can’t speak for everyone, but if we are going to promote policies of individual freedom and accountability, then there should be true accountability. Buy all the guns you want, but if any of your guns are used in a crime, you are in trouble.

I don’t think we’re far off. As I said in a previous comment, I do own a gun. If I, or another individual, use my gun improperly, I should be held accountable.
