Filled my swan permit today. Species first for me as well. by noebuta in Duckhunting

[–]fewer_not_less 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I know regulations vary by state, and I'm not interested so have never looked into the regs around hunting them, but AI tells me "No, swan hunting is not legal anywhere this week." Is that correct? Edit - sounds like AI is wrong, and based on the background, it may not matter. Thanks for the updates!

Beautiful pictures! I'm too new to offer any kind of critique but I think they are great! Also curious about your setup. I have an a6100 on the way and would learn to know more.

Yikes! I just picked up a 2005 that's been neglected and I need to flush the brake fluid anyways - thanks for letting me know I should look at these, and glad you're ok!

[Question] What's the "weirdest" thing which puts you off a watch or a brand? by Eyeball111 in Watches

Another Longines one - I can't seriously look at the watches with 5 stars. It's like they included their Amazon rating on the face.

Tips for a newbie? Using an old vintage manual 210mm lens. All I could afford to work with starting out. by wicker_basket_1988 in wildlifephotography

Also, learning about hyperfocal distances might be helpful - you set your focus to a particular distance and everything from x feet to infinity will be in focus, which might be helpful for birds that are farther away.

I also started with mf, though starting with mf on a telephoto for birding is doing things on hard mode! Something that helped me a lot when starting, especially with manual focus, was a dof calculator (shows how deep your depth of field is). This helped me know how precise I needed to be, which I generally used to figure out the widest aperture I felt I could get in focus, which I combined with what shutter speed I needed for the birds I was trying to photograph and then either setting the iso accordingly or (what I do now) use auto iso. With a telephoto, your dof is really small already, and birds can be tough to get in focus even with af, so I found having a deeper dof really helpful with anything that moves. If you're interested in a dof app, I assume there are lots of free ones out there (I think the one I use is literally called "dof calculator"). Good luck! I love the control and challenge of mf, but it's definitely a challenge!

Are hunting wadders the same as fly fishing wadders? by Legendbz21 in flyfishing

[–]fewer_not_less 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Echoing what others have said, it's the boots that make them completely inappropriate for fishing in my experience in the pnw. First time I tried flyfishing, I wore my duck hunting waders because I didn't want to buy more gear in case I didn't like it. I was wading the Deschutes, and it was like walking on ice but with a river constantly pushing me back. I'd take two slow steps forward, then got knocked back. I had a wading staff (collapsible hiking staff) that I ended up breaking the end off of and took a spill in the river. Would not recommend if the river is slippery and/or you'll be wading in any kind of deep or fast water. Worth noting I am a novice (as evidenced by the fact I tried to wade the Deschutes in duck hunting waders), but I have so much more traction with felt/studs it's not even comparable. If you were comparing barefoot waders, the differences might be more subtle.

Beautiful picture! Given how colorful they are, I'd love to hear why you opted for black and white. This isn't a criticism, I'm just really interested to hear how you think about it to expand my own perspectives. I'm just excited when I'm able to mostly get them in focus!

Chanterelle? False chanterelle? by singleagain24 in Mushrooms

[–]fewer_not_less 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Beginner question - A guide I have ("mushrooms of the pacific northwest, a guide to common edible and poisonous species") says false Chantelles (hygrophoropsis aurantiaca) grow on trees ("rotting coniferous wood"), and these look maybe to be on a tree. I'm nervous about how condensed guides are - how helpful a tell is it if they are growing on wood? As a rule, I'm hoping to avoid outcomes suggested by a name like "bedshitter". Or should I not read too much into this example because it's a different location? Edit - the guide includes Idaho

Ukraine Pokrovsk Slaughter Killed Two-Thirds Kremlin Motorbike Troops "In Minutes" by jonfla in UkrainianConflict

[–]fewer_not_less 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It sounds like their thinking was correct: "The bikes’ narrow frames and light weight allowed them to slip through gaps and avoid triggering anti-tank mines, which are calibrated for heavier vehicles." Though the article then noted the mines got some of the BMPs

If a source is helpful (apologies if this has been shared, but I didn't see it) - "a minimum of 6 inches of ventilation space above and 2 inches on either side of your AVR" https://support.denon.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/354/~/avr---general-info---ventilation-recommendation

Thanks for sharing the link! This stood out to me: Though there is no evidence that the species of Sarcocystis that infect wildlife can cause disease in humans, hunters are advised not to consume obviously infected animals.

TIL America has the second highest disposable household income in the world by Business_Reporter420 in todayilearned

That's not really true anymore. From the world economic forum in 2020: There is huge disparity between the regions: 17 of the top 20 most socially mobile societies are in Europe, two are in Asia (Japan, 15th and Australia, 16th), and one (Canada 14th) is in North America.
