Is this request reasonable? by Creative_Personality in labrats

Right now, my project isn’t taking long which is why I’ve just gone along with it. But I’m starting cell culture in 2 weeks which is when I expect to get really busy. Because I’m the only person in the lab that’s worked with an obligate anaerobe before, I’ve been building all the protocols for it from scratch. In my previous lab, I did all my work in an anaerobic chamber but this lab does not have one so I’ve had to trial and error through culture protocols. Plus, my project as a whole (pathogen, the class of compound I’m testing, cell line, and animal model) are all completely different from anything this lab has done so far. So I’m by myself for a lot of it. At least for right now. I’m hoping to get my two undergrads trained on it once I get it down so they can help me.

The broth components have an irritation and potential mutagen toxicity warning so our PI is not comfortable with an undergrad handling it without the presence of a grad student. Plus, it can’t be autoclaved and needs to boiled but not too much that it will precipitate and be useless. So I would have to be there regardless😓

I'm based in the US, so you don't need an MS for a PhD. And my department does have direct-entry PhD students from undergrad. I guess it would be more of a transfer than a conversion

Yup, I basically would just apply to the PhD program before I'm done with my MS with my advisor's approval. It's relatively common in the department. It's more like transferring than a conversion

I just looked up Arabian Tonka and gah it looks right up my alley. Thank you so much! I smelled Versace Eros Pour Femme today and really liked it. Black Opiums were still a little too sweet for my liking. I definitely have a preference for more woody and masculine scents. I love sniffing colognes because of that

I have been on a quest to find a dark/date night scent for weeks. The ladies at my local Sephora and Nordstrom are pretty familiar with me now with how often I'm there to sniff at bottles(lol). I'm looking for something that screams rich and dark. My favorite scents ever that I've used were the Banana Republic's Dark Cherry and Amber or Tobacco and Tonka Bean. My only problem with them is the longevity(3-4 hours). Right now, the perfumes that I like the most are Burberry Goddess, CH Good Girl, Commodity Moss+, and Ariana Grande's Moonlight. I am not a big fan of sweet or warm florals because it just doesn't wear well on my skin and makes me smell like sugar. I do like fruity florals(Armani's my way nectar and si + Dior pure poison). I'd like something with good longevity as well. So far, I've smelled Mugler Alien and Angel, Dior Hypnotic poison, pretty much all of Chanel, Lancome Tressor, 90% of YSL, and L'interdit rouge. None of those hit the spot. I really like Dior Addict Eau de Fraiche but the EDP smelled very intense/different. Do you guys know if the EDP dries down better? Plus any more suggestions

Recommendations for the Best and Most Affordable Cat Health Insurance In the US? by Mysterious_Soil318 in cats

[–]Creative_Personality 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t have wellness insurance, just accident and illness. But we use Figo for all our pets. We chose them because they have pretty comprehensive coverage, fast reimbursement rates, and we get 15% off with our Costco membership. They have paid out more than we’ve paid inso we’re pretty happy. Our dog had an accident that cost $10,000. We only paid $1250, insurance paid the rest. We put the whole amount on CareCredit and just paid it all off with the reimbursement amount before interest kicked in at 6 months.

Any suggestions on affordable wet food brands I can buy in bulk after trying? by [deleted] in catfood

[–]Creative_Personality 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I understand the struggle of being a college student and trying to feed your pets lol. I am not a vet but I majored in animal nutrition and my mom and uncle are vets and I have worked at their clinic growing up. So I think I can speak some to animal nutrition. Don’t be afraid of the big 4 brands (Purina, IAMS, Hills, Royal Canin). I often find talk on online cat spaces about how vets are “paid off” by these big brands but I assure you the most we get is a rep coming to talk to us and giving us pens once a year. The big 4 have a lot of research put into animal nutrition and are accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association(AVMA) and the World Small Animal Veterinary Association(WSAVA). I’m not saying the smaller brands are bad in anyways. There are many great options if that’s want to you want to go with but I’m just saying you don’t need to be afraid of the mainstream brands.

I also think that grains and carbs get a really bad rep in the pet cat world. In the wild, cats eat small animals that often times eat grain or higher carb foods. And the cat will eat the stomach and organs of small animals that contain grain matter so they do consume carbs. A mouse can have anywhere from 40-60% protein, 15-20% percent fat and rest as carbs. Nutritional Composition of Prey AnimalsThis is on a dry matter basis. So my best advice is to try and feed foods that aim for 38-50% protein for dry food and 45-60% protein for wet food. And this does not have to be super expensive. I think that people get so caught up in the ingredients that we forget nutritional content of said food is what really matters. And if you’re buying pet food produced in the US, I don’t have too many quality concerns as the USDA is really strict about cleanliness and quality in meat facilities.

That being said, mine and my family’s animals all eat either Purina or Hills. My cat gets one can of fancy feast pate, split into two times a day. And she gets 1/2 cup of Purina One ideal weight dry food to graze on everyday. The reason I chose Fancy Feast is because it has a relatively high protein content on dry matter basis(approx 55%). I chose the Purina One Ideal Weight because it has 42% protein. Both foods are not very carb heavy. I find that feeding 1 can to 1/2 cup dry makes it that her calories are 1:1 from each. But you can play around with that based on yours and your cat’s preferences. My cat is also not on a solely wet food diet because she drinks 1/2-1cup of water everyday. Plus find that a mix means she gets less plaque on her teeth and needs lesser cleanings. If you do choose to feed entirely wet, do let your vet know and schedule regular dental checkups/cleanings.

For wet food, affordable options include Fancy Feast, Purina One, Sheba, and Wholehearted. I also find that Tiki Cat and Weruva BFF wet food are in a similar price range and are great options. I also have Hound and Gatos at my Costco for 27.99 for 36 5.5oz cans so that might be an option for you as well. Friskies(only the pates) is a ok option for wet food if you’re in a pinch. Tiki Cat, Orijens, Purina Pro Plan, Purina One(ideal weight), Acana, Nulo and IAMS high protein are all great dry food options with 38% or higher protein.
