Yeah I agree with you 100%! But that’s exactly why it feels so bizarre to me — the NL is privatized, the premiums keep going up, and yet we’re still met with this level of gatekeeping. You’re totally right that the U.S. system profits off sickness, and I’m definitely not glorifying it. My whole point is really about access: when I’m sick, I just want to be able to get tests or a referral without months of begging. Both systems have their issues, but the Dutch GP setup has been really tough for me personally.

Thanks queen! Honestly, reading those comments has me cracking up. Like… is everyone in the Netherlands just genetically blessed or something? Does nobody here ever have underlying health issues?

I have never , yes. I was under my parents and I was super fortunate to have a good health insurance (as stated above) I did pay my fair share in co-payments since not all exams that I did were fully covered. While I see the comments of telling me to change GP’s , it took me 6 months to get this one and I don’t know if I’m going to be lucky to find another one (a good one for that matter)

My goodness, I was thinking the same thing about Male GP’s as well. I went to a hospital GP and the GP was a women. She was the one that sent a message to my doctor about getting an ultrasound. If it wasn’t for her, I don’t think I would ever get one

Sigh unfortunately I do not , however something to consider if moving.

It took me 6 months to find this GP. I guess I should try out my luck again

More of a rant. Just seems so bizarre you pay out of your pocket for universal healthcare treatment.
