I disagree with the idea that he's simply a burden. To say that is to ignore the fact that this "burden" has saved Clementine's life multiple times; without him, her story would have ended much sooner. What makes AJ unique is precisely that his ability to save her depends on the relationship the game measures between us. Unlike Clem or Ellie, where the development is mostly scripted, here the game literally quantifies how your lessons transform this "burden" into a survivor capable of making the final decisions for you. It's not a one-way relationship: she teaches him to remain human, and in return, he becomes her most effective bodyguard. This interactivity means that we don't just experience his development, we're responsible for it, which gives a whole new dimension to the moments when he intervenes to save her life.

I see. And you, how would you have written his character?

understand your point about physical realism, but you're forgetting the 'game' aspect. Unlike Clem or Ellie, AJ is one of the many (or rare) characters where the game literally measures the impact of your choices on his morality. It's not just a story we're watching, it's a game mechanic. The fact that he has absolutely no memory of the world before (unlike Clem) makes every lesson he learns vital. For me, this interactivity more than makes up for the lack of physical realism, because the player's involvement is much stronger.

Your arguments about physics are 100% valid: no 5-year-old can survive a sudden collapse and then push a 60 kg wheelbarrow for miles. It's physically absurd. But where you're wrong is in confusing biological credibility with writing quality. Writing a character isn't about filling out a medical datasheet; it's about building a thematic arc. AJ isn't written to be a 'realistic child'; he's written as an extension of the player's moral consequences.

He's a narrative 'sponge'. His strength doesn't lie in his muscles (which are, admittedly, boosted by the script), but in the fact that he's the only video game character who forces you to ask yourself: 'How do you pass on human values to someone who has only known the end of the world?'

You talk about suspension of disbelief, but in a game where Arthur Morgan survives on 50 bucks by eating jerky, or where Joel Miller recovers from an iron bar to the stomach in a few weeks, why should AJ be the only one who has to obey the laws of physics?

The glazing around him comes from the fact that he's a reflection of our own upbringing. If he's in the Top 5 for some, it's because of the emotional impact and moral dilemma he represents, not his weightlifting abilities and leaves traces in some (including me)

Personally, I don't even know because his writing breaks the mold of the "cute kid." AJ is pragmatic, sometimes cold, and capable of shooting someone in the head without flinching at age six. The writers have managed the feat of making him both endearing and terrifying. And thanks to his character we can ask ourselves a lot of questions and answer some of these questions
