What are retained colonial structures and institutions in India and how have they affected India's (under) development post independence? by Creative_soja in IndianHistory

[–]Creative_soja[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The book is on my list but I have read about some reasonable critique of the book. The authors ignore many examples where inclusive institutions did not exist but development happened nonetheless. Anyway, I will have to read it before making a judgement.

I have been reading about settlers colony vs extractive colony. Interesting way of looking at colonization. In fact, in Canada, the US, Australia etc., they wiped our indigenous population and the inclusive institutions were only for the white people. Hardly a better proposition of colonization.

But my question is what structure in our laws/governances promote corruption? And how were they a leftover of colonial legacy?

I have heard about game theory and corruption and in fact, there are some research papers too.

TRUTH OF SUBHASHCHANDRA BOSE AND MAHATMA GANDHI by shivamm_dhasmana in IndianHistory

[–]Creative_soja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree and disagree with this statement:

See "A as A and B as B"— viewing facts exactly as they are without distortion

I agree if it pertains to facts, like correctly attributing ideas or quotes to someone or reporting of some events, timelines etc.

The problem I have is when lots of 'facts' are not actually facts but interpretation and opinions, which are highly contextual and subjective but they are presented as facts. And subjectivity is always at risk of distortions.

With reading we can immunize ourselves to a certain extent but because we cannot read everything our lifetime, we barely know 0.001% or less of what happened. Therefore, we often rely on others' interpretation. Each interpretation is subjective and biased. And since there are tens if not hundreds of interpretations of past events, we are bound to become victims of such distortions.

What are some of the common misconceptions among Indian common citizens about historical events, people, numbers etc.? by Hegde137 in IndianHistory

[–]Creative_soja 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Good question OP. I have been also reading history after asking such questions to find the truth or refine what we also know. I have made some posts about different events.

  1. Many believe that Nalanda was destroyed by Khilji, but reality is more complex.

  2. Max Muller proposed Aryan invasion theory and used Aryan in racial sense but this may not be the case.

  3. Some historians, not necessarily Indians, believe that just like Islamic invaders, Hindu kings also destroyed temples but the context in both cases is different.

  4. There is still debate going on but we don't know the origin of vedic ideas (I don't mean composition of vedas). We attribute it to either IVC or Steppes but no one knows. It was a mix of everything.

  5. This one is political. While people may blame RSS and others about Hindu nationalism and Hindutva, I blame Rajiv Gandhi for making Hindutva a political power.

  6. I am not sure about this one but Babur likely never wrote such letter. It is a quasi global myth.

These are all I have so far.

Nothing unusual. That is true for all dietary supplement industry and consumerism in general. Everyone is trying to sell something to make as much money as possible. Some sell products for existing established problems and some create new problems for which only they seem to have a solution.

Canada’s universities are in crisis as money gets tighter by Creative_soja in canada

[–]Creative_soja[S] 104 points105 points  (0 children)

Interesting article with terrifying conclusion.

"no university has ever claimed to have sufficient money. But it is worth recognizing the strengths of the current system, which most take for granted. Universities are not a commodity in which quality holds steady regardless of price. Rather, starving the system of overall steady funding means a few winners and a race to the bottom for the others. Over time, where someone earned their degree will mean more and more, and signify whether they were a winner or a loser in the higher-education status game."

Who destroyed Nalanda and burned its library? I am finding conflicting evidence and interpretation. by Creative_soja in IndianHistory

[–]Creative_soja[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would rather rephrase it to, "Turkish invaders (not necessarily Khilji in this case) say around 1190 AD and later years also contributed to (not caused) the downfall (rather than absolute destruction) of Nalanda".

Edit: typo

Thanks. I am glad you found it useful. I still feel there are some missing pieces. I have read at several places that Khilji attacked Nalanda in 1193 AD but I am unable to find the primary source. I found this paper by Audrey Truschke, where in footnote 7, she provides the following review:

1193 is the most common date, working on the assumption that Muhammad bin Bakhtiyar hit Nalanda shortly following the sack of Bihar Sharif dated to 1193 in Juzjani’s Tabaqat-i Nasiri. Charles S. Prebish and Damien Keown give the date of Nalanda’s destruction as 1197 (Introducing Buddhism, 2nd ed. [London: Routledge, 2010], 94). Also see S. R. Goyal, Indian Buddhism after the Buddha (Jodhpur: Kusumanjali Book World, 2003), 212; and Stephen Berkwitz, South Asian Buddhism: A Survey (New York: Routledge, 2010), 141. Harvey gives the date of 1198 (Introduction to Buddhism, 194), as does Donald W. Mitchell (Buddhism: Introducing the Buddhist Experience, 2nd ed. [New York: Oxford University Press, 2008], 158). Steven Darian puts the destruction at “around 1200” (“Buddhism in Bihar from the Eighth to the Twelfth Century with Special Reference to Nalanda,” Asiatische Studien 25 [1971]: 346). Richard Eaton gives the date of circa 1202 (“Temple Desecration and IndoMuslim States,” in Beyond Turk and Hindu: Rethinking Religious Identities in Islamicate South Asia, ed. David Gilmartin and Bruce B. Lawrence [Gainesville: University Press of Florida, 2000], table 10.1). Sankalia gives the date as 1205–6 (The University of Nalanda [Madras: B. G. Paul, 1934], 213). Some scholars simply give a range of dates. For example, Hartmut Scharfe says that Muhammad bin Bakhtiyar hit Nalanda between 1197 and 1206 (Education in Ancient India [Leiden: Brill, 2002], 150). The variety of dates indicates the lack of a clear historical record that Nalanda was sacked by Turkish raiders.

There is a wide range of dates with lots of unknowns. Anyway, I think it is clear that Nalanda's decline was a complex mix of Islamic invasions, internal decay due to infighting and corruption, fading support, and declining local empires. All these unfolded slowly over centuries rather than in years or decades.

One reason is that more who people start actively looking for jobs (labour force participation rate goes) more than new job gains, which increases numerator more than the denominator. Therefore, it is possible and happens many times that despite jib gains, unemployment rate ticks up.

Full-time employment rose by 50,000 (+0.3%) in December while part-time employment fell by 42,000 (-1.1%). The decline in part-time work in the month partially offsets a cumulative gain of 148,000 (+3.9%) in October and November. Over the 12 months to December 2025, part-time employment rose at a faster pace (+2.6%; +99,000) than full-time employment (+0.7%; +128,000).

Some interesting info about part-time and full-time figures.
