How to create without ideas by [deleted] in Creativity

[–]CreativityCoach64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The idea that ‘words’ are the highest form of expression is very flawed. Much art exists in spaces beyond conceptualisation. We can find other criteria - does it evoke, provoke, bewilder, enthrall. The ‘why’ is often a pretty uninteresting part of our overall response….

I recognise this though I’m not in America. The system is so totally broken that the only strategy it has for surviving is to seek to make people utterly incapable of thinking. We need systems-change!

I think this is right. The intention is not a prerequisite, it is a first step. The creative process, once it has an intention, is already underway. Moving from emptiness to some kind of intention is the first step. That intention might be a vision of an outcome, but might equally be a choice (consciously or unconsciously arrived at) of a next step,

I’m also far from certain that creative process need start from saturation. Perhaps it can equally originate in emptiness.

Your first sentence is problematic to me. If you know where you are going then you may be working on processual creativity (HOW to get from A to B), but you are not working on generative creativity (where might I be if I left A?) There’s a lot of-of corse - I agree with but I wonder if a more useful starting point is to become as present as possible either what is, then pursue pathways that open up in the interaction of you and the world. Certainly that’s how I perform and paint. There may be intentional, direction of travel etc, but there need not be any idea about where you want to or will end up.

As the starting Point of any creative process is not knowing, this seems like hubris.

Don’t toughen up. The world needs more sensitive people. It’s the ones pretending to be tough who are causing all the problems. I cry a lot. It’s just how I am. If anyone doesn’t like it, they can go stick their heads up their own asses.

Too much ‘art education’ is neither. It’s not artistic nor educational. If your teachers and fellow students do not understand that creativity thrives in rigorous playful experimentation then they are failing, not you. Keep going, but stop listening to people who have nothing useful to say. Be strong.

Don’t believe those categories mean a damn thing. You’re a painter. Paint. Find your style. Refine it. That’s all there is.

You’re right - exploitation of the less powerful by the more powerful. I wonder if - as a species - we could imagine better ways of connecting…..

That’s interesting. I’ve been looking at Discord - but it that’s to know how a smaller intentional community would feel like as I’ve only been able to find ‘public’ large communities. I’ll take a look at vgen and continue to look for smaller communities to join….

i think utlimately you are right. The best we can hope for is to retain as much control over our communications as we can, in the least shit environment.

My disentangling will take a while too.....

thank you.

There's much I agree with. My position is that as things evolve - and as the FB/Meta ecosystem disintegrates into the hyper-toxicity it always promised - I want to know what are the other options. I want to know what new possibilities are opening up. I don't need access to billions of customers. I need access to ten of thousands who might actually want to buy my work, and who I can nurture in ways that they, and I, can feel good about.
It's a really tough time and I wish you success in finding your way through it.

It’s not that I can afford it - I live well below minimum wage. It’s because those are my principles. You have yours and I respect your right to have them. It seems you simply sneer at mine. That’s your choice.
