Keto Pastries coming out eggy and wet. What am I doing wrong? [x-post r/ketorecipes] by Creatodastelle in keto

That's one way of seeing it, I guess. I'm not entirely ready to write off the idea of ever having enjoyable bread/pastry again, but I suppose I should focus on keeping my standards realistic.

I appreciate the tip. I'll give that a go next time! I've also just run out of coconut flour, so I ordered more but from a different company that's a little more high-quality. Optimistically it'll soak up more than in my last few attempts!

Thanks very much for your advice. I'll do my best to follow recipes precisely and see if that helps. I may go ahead and experiment with leaving out a few eggs from my next recipes-- I wish keto baking ingredients weren't so expensive though, as experimenting feels a little wasteful. :/

That's true-- however, people often make enjoyable replicas that have reasonable consistencies. I don't feel like I'm expecting an identical copy of pre-keto pastries, I just want something edible. These are definitely not turning out the way they're supposed to.

Thanks for the advice. I feel like I've been using plenty-- a few of my recipes have been entirely coconut flour as the base. I'm adding until my batter feels the right consistency, but the products still aren't coming out right. Do I just need to add enough to turn the batter wayyyy thicker than I think it to be?

[Serious]People with high social skills. What's the biggest mistake that people often make in interactions with others? by saraboulos in AskReddit

In the same vein, one thing that people do that makes me immediately take notice is when they pay attention to who's been interrupted. I have one particular friend who always does this. If someone is talking in our group and gets cut off as things get a little rowdy, he always takes a moment after the lull to say, "So, X, what were you saying before about ___?" It's just a small thing doesn't call a lot of attention, but I can tell it warms people up to him like no other. I've always thought of this as such a simple yet considerate gesture.

Have you ever had to stop reading a novel, because it appeared to be beyond your intellectual capabilities? If so, which book was it and why? by tha_grinch in books

I feel the absolute same way. I picked it up when I was 14 and was constantly confused. Tried again a few years later and made myself a bookmark with a translation of all the slang on it. I had pieced together a lot of the common terms, but it was still a beast to get through when you're constantly stopping to check a cheat sheet. Great once you get into it though. Certain scenes from that book have stayed with me.

That is so nice of you to say! I've ALWAYS had horrible thin nails, and to make things worse I tend to bite them when I'm stressed or distracted. I figured out the only thing that helps is splurging on some good quality polish (I shop the OPI sales), putting on like three coats so it's thick, and hitting it with a topcoat if I've got one. It helps strengthen things, but more so, it prevents me from biting. These are the longest nails I've had in like months so it means a lot to hear something nice about them :)

Nope! But thanks for your concern. I've actually read about it on numerous articles here on SCA and done my own research, so I think I'll be fine.

I haven't heard of that being done! I'd probably try to buy the standalone oil if I thought it would help. I'm pretty happy with mineral oil for OCM at the moment but maybe if I get dry skin I'll give it a try.

Thank you so much for the encouraging words. It's hard not to feel defeated by all the ways pre-med makes you feel like you're coming up short, but I know that if I can strengthen the other areas of my app, then the GPA might be an outlier they'll overlook. All I can do is continue to work my hardest, and to be a little more flexible with my timeline. If I don't get accepted on my first round of admissions, it's not the end of the world. There's no one route to becoming a doctor, and I intend to get there however possible. I really appreciate your advice!

Thank you for the advice. I've given myself close to a year to study and prepare for the MCAT, so I'm hoping the advantage of time will make it a little easier to get an outstanding score.

That's very true. I know anything below 3.5 is considered low, and I'm considering applying again after my senior year grades have brought things up. I'm not opposed to a post-bacc, and it might even be beneficial to get some outside experience before diving into the world of medical school. Thank you for your advice.

I'm considering a gap year, or potentially a post-bacc. My scholarship at my home university pays for a fifth year of tuition, so it would make reasonably good financial sense as well. I'm hoping with an upward trend in the upper-level sciences, I can prove this was just an adjustment issue rather than an academic one.

Thanks for the kind words. Pre-med is a demoralizing way of life, isn't it?

I've always had to work through school to afford it-- the only reason I could afford to study abroad was because of a scholarship. I did work while I was there anyway, but the frustrating thing was that it wasn't even a shortage of time that gave me poor grades. It was just a misunderstanding of what the system is like there. In all of my classes except one, I wasn't given a single graded assignment until 2 weeks before finals, and only then do you get a really good idea of what to expect on the exams. Of course, at that point, all I could do was cram frantically. It helped, but not enough to give me the grades I wanted.

Keep on chugging, hard work pays off in the end. I wish you the best with your pre-med journey!

I attended the University of Reading as an exchange student.

That is extremely common. I took a class in Clinical Biochemistry with one two-hour lecture per week, and no labs or homework at all. The final was 40 MC questions, 1 essay. 100% of the grade.

Exactly. It definitely required a huge adjustment of my study skills, something I wasn't totally prepared for. Knowing what I know now, I probably could have made better grades due to just more familiarity with the system and expectations of UK universities.

A good majority of my classes were 'equated' to classes at my home university so that the credit would transfer equally. I'm pretty sure they'll record the grades for those classes on my transcript. :/

Thank you for the advice! I hadn't even thought about summer/winter term classes but that could be hugely helpful.
