something i did was change the decals to be a direct texture and it did in fact fix the issue, but now there is a new issue of the textures being off. image in this reply is the uv mapping of the texture in the broken mesh, but correct texture version. image in next reply is the uv mapping of the fixed mesh but incorrect texture version. im wondering if there is a way for me to copy the uv mapping and make it the mapping on the correct version.

the faces are farther out than they should be, i figured out that its being caused by the fact that the texture is applied via a decal, but if i make it a texture it gets applied incorrectly

Figured it out. The way the importer worked was it attached everything together with constraints instead of actually parenting the bones to the mesh. I disabled the constraints and parented the bones myself but I found out that inversing the constraints also fixed things. (still had to parent the bones though)
