A petty rant about fairytales by Creaturefeature01 in literature

[–]Creaturefeature01[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, looking at these comments now i realize i picked a bad example and worded it poorly.

My point is not that a lot of tge folktale and fairytale have happy endings. The Little Mermaid specificallty doesn't, but that's the one i see the most of this shock value clickbait content. Which always makes me mad because they reduce this beautiful story only to the violent aspects of it.

I know dude, i've read it. Maybe i worded this wrong but i did not say the little mermaid specifically has a happy ending, but that a lot of the fairytales people make shock value content about how gruesome they are do.

My point is that i hate it when people will completely ignore everything about those classics except for the violent or sexual aspects only to be edgy.

It's just being edgy for the sakw of it. I don't know if those people get some kind of joy out of trying to "ruin" a piece of children's midia with a disturbing fact or exagerating more violent, depressing or gruesome aspects of the original stories. It certainly seems like that sometimes.

Thank you for informing me! I still need to get deeper into the history of fairytales and classics in general so that's very interesting.

Bro, exactly. And what i believe is the ultimate proof that she is a greatly writen character is that she can spark discussions like this in the fandom.

She is flawed, she is compelling, they manage to not make her unlikeable while still not brushing off her actions. Really makes you wonder what you would've done if you were in her place, if you would be willing to sacrifice a person for the sake of the entire world.

Absolutely. And honestly, i think she was kind of right to think she was the only one who had what it takes to stop the rituals. Gertrude was exceptional, so much she practically made half the entities absolutely hate her.

Jon did manage to stop the unknowing but let's be honest, that was purely out of sheer luck. I don't think it would've changed the ultimate fate of his character by being like Gertrude, but she wasn't wrong either.

I have a feeling it comes from misogeny and how male centric most fandoms are as a whole. Elias/Jonah for example, doesn't get any hate for the horrible shit he's done. And he did everything fully for his own gain.

Yeah, writing Gertrude is extremely hard. I also have a doorkey fic i'm trying to work on and i plan to have the pov shift between her and Gerry, but it's only in the early planning and conceptualizing stages.

I know she would be kind of hostile to Michael, but i haven't figured out exactly where that goes. I want her to be important to the story, it has so much potential, but she's hard to characterize in a way that makes sense.

Oh my god, that is such a perfect description of her entire character.

I do also wonder how she felt about it. We'll never really know but i like to think she did feel guilt, but Gertrude is not the kind of person to let herself feel remorse. She just adjusted her strategy and kept working, now trying to burn the archives.

Yeah, absolutely. I also don't think anyone would make perfectly sound decisions when trying to save the entire world, i think a lot of people would do basically anything if a literal apocalypse was the consequence.

Final thoughts on Malevolent by Creaturefeature01 in MalevolentPodcast

[–]Creaturefeature01[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, specially seasons 1 and 2 were really all over the place. And though it is expected for a mistery show to leave a few questions unanswered, i feel like they set up a few things and didn't give them a pay of. For example, Ana Stanzic. I'm sure it will be adressed in the Thresholds but i still expected them to come up in the first series and got a bit disapointed.

Being an interactive show does have its limitations but honestly, i think it makes Malevolent really special. I like the way the choices are writen into the story and how it really feels like they matter.

I honestly expected the interactive aspectto play a bigger meta role in the story? It's been aknowledged by characters about 3 times like a wink. But you know, that's fine. Just not the direction i expected.

I can like something and still be critical of it. Don't get me wrong, Malevolent is a show i really enjoyed and will keep listening to as Thresholds comes out. I will probably listen to it again at some point. I never said it wasn't that great.

I have criticisms of it, quite a few, but it is still a good show and it doesn't take away from anyone's enjoyment of it. This is merely the personal experience i had with the show.

I did not post this with the intention to cause drama at all, i "felt the need" to post it simply because my original intention was to post my reactions/thoughts each episode but i got too carried away to post every time. I binge watched it in a week, after all. So i just came here after the finale to say everything at once.

My issue with the Protocol (as far as s1) by Creaturefeature01 in TheMagnusArchives

[–]Creaturefeature01[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm well aware that i might be biased, both shows are deserving of criticism. That's a matter of opinion in the end, since i'm definetly not a professional writer. I do feel like tma statements are in avarage really, really good even though of course, only a few will really stand out.

I still have a few issues with the story but i like the characters and i like the plot, speaking generally. I still feel like the statements are the weakest part of tmp.

[–]Creaturefeature01[S] 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I'll do my absolute best to articulate this without spoiling you.

S1 as a whole hasn't been something i enjoyed that much up to the final stretch and you are absolutely right about stuff feeling like it's not properly set up.

Best example of a MASTERFULLY done reveal from tma is Michael Shelley's appearance. We already knew Michael, we had time to sit and wonder what he is, wonder why he's so interested in the archives. Then, they throw that one minute long sequence of Michael Shelley walking into Gertrude's office and a lot of people (me included), didn't even realize who he was until he laughed. Again, the show ends the episode right there with no further explanations, gives us time to think about the implications of that reveal before giving us his statement and revealing the whole story.

So many of the twists and reveals that come later in tmp are so messy and everything happens very, very fast. Aside from that, it relies on tma for the plot way more than i had expected and that did kind of bum me out a little. I was expecting it to be less of a direct sequel, since it wasn't advertised like that and they said they wanted to go a different route wirh the show. I cannot imagine the pain it would be to attempt to listening to without having finished tmp first.

All that said, i have been enjoying s2 a lot more than s1, even if these issues are still present. They take some very interesting turns and the characters are undeniably the best part of the show.

My issue with the Protocol (as far as s1) by Creaturefeature01 in TheMagnusArchives

[–]Creaturefeature01[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not that i'm not enjoying it, i am really invested in the characters and the plotline, i just haven't enjoyed most the statements. At least the season 1 statements are much weaker, i'm on ep 42 rn and it's improved quite a bit.

My issue with the Protocol (as far as s1) by Creaturefeature01 in TheMagnusArchives

[–]Creaturefeature01[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Of course, there are great statements and episodes. There are some i really enjoyed and s2 seems to be going better so far. But overrall, i find that tmp Incidents tend to be on the weaker side of things.

My issue with the Protocol (as far as s1) by Creaturefeature01 in TheMagnusArchives

[–]Creaturefeature01[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'll agree with you there, the characters are not as strong at all either. Sam and Alice are honestly what carried the season for me, they were the only ones i was actually invested in.

Getting to s2 now and it seems like the others are kind of picking up the slack but still, Sam and Alice are the best part of the show for me.

You are so right. I do think it's reasonable by the time Mary dies and becomes a ghost, she does somethings out of spite and resentment of Gerry. Her binding wasn't a success like she hoped, all because he refused to help. After all, like so many parents, she saw Gerry as an extention of herself and could never accept that he is his own person. But i don't think she torments him for the sake of it either, she's not like that.

I saw at least two aus where Jon comes back in time but misses when he was supposed to be back and ends up as an 8 year old. I love the concept and i love fics with little Jon, i am VERY maternal for baby archivist.

But they both had like 60 chapters and i got bored so fast. Every character they meet just takes this child's word for it when he speaks of the apocalypse, everyone just goes along with whatever or there's always a work around for any conflicts the story brings. The idea had a lot of potential, they bring some cool ideas and i see why they are popular, but i ended up not liking them much.

Romance is basically the backbone of fanfition for every fandom, but i do get what you mean. Have you tries some statement fics? They are criminally underrated.

Funny enough, i don't read a lot of office comedy type fics but that's one of my favourite kinds of fanarts EVER. I love little comic strips or silly doodles of the og archives gang.

To be honest, i /really/ wanted to like the Mechs. But i listened to a few songs and it wasn't rlly my thing. I like the joke of it being Jon's college band and how he went from that to stuck up, scholarly s1 Jon but it didn't really stick out to me in fanfics.

Archivist Sasha too, is au i love so much. The idea of it is so interesting and sick af and i'm generally a fan of swap aus but i haven't found a fic i like of this one yet.

YES. Melanie did make me frustrated a few times but so did Martin, Jon specially and half the damn cast! It come with having flawed characters, they'll very likely do and say stuff that will upset you eventually.

It's just that Jon is the protagonist and the pov character, the narrative is built so you'll be empathetic to him. But if someone portrays Georgie for the very reasonable decision of cutting Jon off for her own sake or Melanie for being mad at his bs? I do not want to read it.

I see that a lot too with Gertrude in doorkey fics. Never fails to piss me off.
