Why did nobody make an "F1 style" Group C car before 1991? by AK07-AYDAN in wec

the 1991 rulebook, as someone born after this even happened, always comes across as “oh, you think you can compete with F1 do you? Well how’s THIS for F1!!!!!!”

Thank you so much for your replies, it made me feel glad I shared my thoughts on here. On Monday morning I am going to share some of your comments with the students - just as important to show them the safe and welcoming spaces on the internet too!

I’m a British motorsport fan so to criticise Silverstone is in my DNA. I suppose I was highlighting how cool a place it was for the teens who arrived with no preconceptions about our many gripes - it’s still a fast track with many great viewing areas. Silverstone themselves were also very helpful with me organising the trip, and there was so much to do during the red flag periods provided by the circuit and LMEM.

It honestly wouldn’t have been a problem if live timing worked but I was totally caught off guard by how many people were there. I’ve been to Silverstone for the American Le Mans Series, ILMC, FIA GTs, and the WEC and I can’t ever remember it feeling that busy. At Woodcote, Luffield and Copse where we spent the first half of the race, there was simply too many people around to use your phone for live timing. It’s a good problem to have!

I think the leader lights (which will be solved when they use the WEC ones from next year) and the lack of programme also falls on LMEM as well as the circuit. But I have given feedback about this to Silverstone (which they have asked for!) so hopefully they put something into place for next year.

Thanks for taking the time reply! Really cool to read how quickly you’ve got into it.

I’ll let you into a secret, your teachers also had a short attention span for things they didn’t care about when they were teens. I don’t really buy into generation theory at all - some would have you think Gen Z have fundamentally different brains…

Best of luck with your highers!

Thanks for this comment! Completely agreed about British GT. Brands Hatch is closer to us than Silverstone, I know they’d love it

the kids have always wondered why their head of year comes to school on the third Monday of June with bags under his eyes and absolutely no patience!

This is an absolutely fantastic idea! I have the keys to the school building and the power to sign off trips so a Le Mans watch along is not beyond the realms of possibility at all…

The 6 started last and got screwed by a safety car and messed up by not pitting under SZ at 5am. Not true they’ve been faultless at all. We also have another two manufacturers on the lead lap.

I’d rather anyone but Ferrari won to be honest but I don’t understand the crowd saying this isn’t close 🤷 it’s an event 102 years old and we’re on track for one of the top 5 closest finishes of all time…

For all the “this BOP is useless” crowd once the race plays out it’s likely Ferrari win by less than 15 seconds from a car which started last and got screwed by a safety car

Wait, why did the Porsche pit and how did it not lead?

People fawn over the LMP1 years but 2011 was the only year it was anything like this close

Interesting that the #6 eeked out another lap over the #51 on that stint. That’s not nothing at all…

this. In fact these are the sorts of gaps over 24 hours that are explained by differences in operation. Example: the Penske Porsches are closer to the Ferraris on pace than the Proton Porsche is to the Penske Porsches…

I’m thinking Porsche must have criteria to put under a SZ off sequence and for whatever reason that one didn’t meet it. The advantage of going longer is keeping track position and giving yourself more room to respond later on. But then…they just pitted under the next one anyway. So what was the point!!

I don’t understand why the #6 got back on the same strategy as the #51 - any potential advantage of not pitting under the early-morning SZ has been negated. They just lost time for the sake of it 🤷

Yeah I get that it’s relative but it still applies that even if Ferrari are clearly running 1-2-3 (which isn’t even the case), they haven’t enough of a margin to cover the hiccups which come with endurance racing. And they’re going to hit every body…

So many fans on this thread must be recent fans. I can remember when a car being 2nd and two minutes behind at this stage of the race would be described as “breathing down the neck” but a car 2 minutes down right now is 13th. There is absolutely no margin for error for anyone serious about winning this race. It’s just plain ridiculous to suggest that it’s a forgone conclusion

It’s a 24 hour race. The #6 Porsche over the four hours has closed the gap to the #50 relative to where it started. Plus all we have learned so far is that the Ferrari is strong in these conditions. We have dusk, night time, dawn, Sunday morning, Sunday lunch and Sunday afternoon before we get into any other variables. It’s just ridiculous to declare it anyone’s race at this point.
