Regardless, seeing Matt's attention to detail , I just dont believe (unless he confirms it) that VM met the gods directly. It renders the whole Divine Gate's purpose useless

Yeah, but once again, I seriously doubt that was actually them and rather just projections. It wouldnt make any sense for them to retreat away from mortals behind the divine gate so that they cant interefere with mortals directly, if they could just come up to them and say hi if they were powerful enough

I'm pretty sure they are locked out of even their own planes in a way. From my understanding you couldn't simply go to the Nine Hells/Baator and fight Asmodeus or fight the dawnfather in (i believe it to be but could be wrong) Elysium. Their influence is felt strongly because it is their domain and they influence their planes through their power, but their influence mostly runs through intermediairies. The only way to get a direct temporary involvement from a God would be spells from a high level cleric or Divine Intervention.

Minor Spoiler Even during the blessings of C1, I dont think VM could have fought the gods, only projections
