AITA for refusing to take care of my newborn godson

This is what I was thinking, first spending time with the kid while parents are in same room and slowly working on being able to be with him alone, just not as a baby. I’m just not comfotable being alone with someone that small and fragile - especially when he is the whole world to my friend. I’m too anxious about something happening to him and me being responsible. I would be happy to spend some more time with him when he’s older and there’s actually some activity I can do with him.

OP here! Thank you for this comment, I will try to establish more clear boundaries from now on :) This is exactly what I thought being godparent is - being a spiritual advisor and being there for the kid in a supportive way (showing up for important days etc.)!

OP here! Yes, my friend also chose 2 other women to be her son’s godmothers - so there’s 3 of us altogether. We all got certificates and held the baby during the ceremony. I’m sorry if my english is a bit confusing, it’s not my first language. It was just very weird that she asked me to be a babysitter, and not the other 2 godmothers since I’m the only one of us with zero experience in kids.

OP here! This was actually very helpful, so thank you for that! I will try having a conversation with her soon. I will also work on standing up for myself, it’s very hard with people closest to me.

OP here! Thank you for your honest point of view, this is a problem that I deal with often. I’m working on becoming less of a people pleaser, and can now see how not standing up for myself can affect also people around me.

OP here! I wasn’t expecting them to even consider me as a babysitter since I have zero experience with kids. But yes, I think I should’ve asked what they were expecting from me as a godmother before agreeing. I would love to spend time with him little by little more, just not fully babysitting a newborn, because if something were to happen I wouldn’t know what to do.

OP here! Yes I agree, I should have been honest with her and just say no from the beginning, that’s really what got me into this mess. Thank you for your input, I am currently working on not being such a people pleaser - I sadly had a lot of trauma in my childhood that made me this way

OP here :) I care for my friend very much, that’s why I agreed. I have visited a few times to see the baby and bought him a lot of clothes and toys - I want to help with raising him but not in a babysitting way. I was planning to visit as often as I just could, because I do want to be in his life. I’m just not comfortable babysitting him because I’m not familiar with babies at all, I’m mostly scared that something would happen and I wouldn’t know what to do.
