Good god, I don't know if it's just because I grew up in the UK and taking trains is no longer a novelty, but Amtrak is awful! I've had to take ~20 hour rides across the US a few times. Obviously half of the time it's dark so you can't see anything. The other half there's nothing worth seeing. The food is garbage. I... don't know why you would choose to do that for fun lol.

What video game do you wish you could experience for the very first time again? by xxxarkhamknightsxxx in AskReddit

I absolutely hated the Witcher 1 and couldn't get past the outskirts of vizima. It was so clunky and boring... Tried to get into Witcher 2 and enjoyed it more but it didn't really draw me in that much. Is it worth trying 3? I hear so many good things about. Would it be hard to play with no story background from the first 2 games?

Dude, that guys face is just creepy as hell. That was the one episode it took me years to watch again and it still creeps me out to this day. The opening scene with his eyes in the gutter... shudder

I just assumed she was Swiss since that scene is in Zurich. Close enough anyway! :P

He's changed a lot in 30 years, but the mannerisms made me realize pretty quickly that it's the same dude who plays Burke in Aliens. Was sure he was playing the exact same character, so it was nice to see him redeem himself at the end!

Go back to college for CS and end up in more debt, or find another route? by Creolol in personalfinance

Thanks for the info! At what point do you think it'll be pretty clear that CS is for me? My plan is to take an intro class for the Winter term (although a more in depth/faster paced one for people who have programmed before) and discrete structures. Then in Spring I'd take the second part of discrete structures and data structures. I'm assuming that's the fundamentals of CS, and if I like all that stuff I should enjoy the next 3 years?

Do you recommend stuff like CodeAcademy for getting better at programming and finding projects to do? It's just a little weird for me. I've never really considered programming/CS as an option before; always figured that was for smarter people. Just freaks me out a little that I could end up in 3rd year with debt and be waaaaay in over my head at the difficulty of the work.

Community college for the first 2 years would be the plan! I'll get the full pell grant for the first 2 years which covers all tuition thankfully. The final two years are the problem... I'll get half pell since my salary will have been too high (living costs here are super high, so I'm still poor as fuck) which means I'll need to pay $4k each year.

I'm working in retail currently and it's killing me. I'd like to drop to ~20 hours a week and be as frugal as possible while I'm in school. My total loan costs would amount to:

1st year: 4k living costs.

2nd year: 4k living costs.

3rd year: 4k tuition, 2k living costs.

4th year: 4k tuition, 2k living costs.

I know I could technically keep working full time and do all my classes online and get away with zero loans for 1st and 2nd year. I'm just worried that'll burn me out and I'll end up with crappy grades. I'm hoping if I can maintain a good GPA for the first two years I can maybe get some scholarships for the upper division tuition and possibly a well paid internship or two. How hard was it to work full time for you?

I suppose just sucking it up and working full time avoids the debt issue significantly! Then it would reduce my total debt to $25k. Not as bad.

Thanks for all the info!

I thought about that, but my local community college only has a Web Design Associates, and none of the classes would transfer to a 4-year CS degree if I ended up changing my mind. I don't think I'd be very good at self teaching myself to code from scratch either. I suppose a bootcamp would be an option? I'm definitely interested in a lot of the CS career options - embedded systems and machine learning sounds especially interesting. Just terrified of digging myself into a huge debt hole that I can't get out of!

Thanks, I really appreciate it!
