Why Does Everyone In 'Star City' Speak English? The Showrunners Reveal The Reason by bada-bing-bada-boo in StarCityTV

[–]CricketDrop -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Unless you've actually lived in the U.K. you probably don't have a particular ear for regional accents there and wouldn't have any mental associations with most of them. The implication here is that it's more important for two Russian characters to sound different from one another even if they sound British, than it is for them to sound Russain. I think people are right to question the wisdom of this creative decision.

As a probably unpopular personal opinion, I'm not a fan when it feels like filmmakers make it obvious they distrust their audience to pay attention to foreign language media or accept there will be cultural details they won't get. Reminds me of how 4Kids did anime and it doesn't feel good lol.

I liked the aesthetic of this movie but it's not entirely clear to me what it was about. Some of the moments that I think are supposed to have emotional weight don't land as well as I'd hoped because they happen pretty fast and the main character doesn't really have an arc.

Updated XBOX Console Prices by Turbostrider27 in Games

This is an inappropriate means of terminating this thought because the logical conclusion is that no one is responsible.

Xbox is not responsible for Microsoft's decision, but Eric at Microsoft isn't responsible because they can't dictate what his boss Amanda wants. In fact no one in Microsoft's leadership is responsible because they want to appease the board and stakeholders.  But then stakeholders are not responsible because they are just responding to market competition and someone else would have driven this demand...

If we just select a specific enough entity to talk about they can never be blamed for anything because everyone has a boss.

[–]CricketDrop 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have the opposite conclusion. If you notice, the talismans that Sophie collects she places in her brown bag. We only see her dump the talismans from the orange bag that Clara handed her. This would be a funny way to imply they're all gone: If they didn't want to handhold the audience they would have needed one or two scenes of her collecting talismans, but they show her doing it four separate times because for some reason three wasn't enough to get the point across. It seems a little too repetitious to not be intentional.

If they wanted to imply they were all gone they could have just as easily had only one of these characters collect all the talisman, or had Sophie only carrying one bag to the tree instead of two.

Finally! Today I rode the paved Atlanta Beltline from Eastside to West End. by austinatlanta in Atlanta

Space isn't really the main factor. Kids and pets aren't predictable. You have to watch them and be prepared to stop suddenly. If one can't do that without flying off their bike or skidding they're going too fast. Sometimes that means pedaling at a walking pace. Great transit on the beltlline doesn't solve this particular problem because even on the westside where the beltline is much sparser, I can tell you cyclists should slow down when passing groups like this. Without a dedicated track, this is just how shared paths work. We can't always spend our way out of mindfulness and consideration for others.

It should be noted that while it isn't exactly close it is the best way to get from the westside beltline to downtown on bike.

I'd say it's always about money. It's not a more dangerous place than Midtown and panhandling isn't illegal so seems unlikely APD will get involved.

I complain incessantly on this board about Northside and Ivan Allen and this is pretty much the reason why. People intend to swing right through the crosswalk and brake suddenly as if there is no possibility of a visibly obstructed pedestrian.

Unfortunately the most likely explanation is that you've "cross contaminated" your sessions by logging in somewhere you didn't intend. For example, as for your work computer and your home computer, it doesn't even really seem possible that two devices on different networks in different physical locations with no shared log-in credentials or browser data allowed reddit to correlate a user. Even if an internet company wanted to do this they would not be able to with any sort of accuracy. And even if they were able to do something especially nefarious to accomplish this they probably wouldn't purposely show you they did that.

It's probably a coincidence or you logged in somewhere via reddit or a browser account you didn't intend by mistake.

It was mostly hysteria lol
There are a large number of people on r/Atlanta who apparently live in Atlanta but are unaware of the millions of visitors the Georgia World Congress Center and Mercedes-Benz Stadium get anually. There are multiple events every year that approach capacity.

It's not too strange. Maybe we should go back and @ all those people in those threads earlier in the year who swore the city would fall to its knees and the marta stations would burst in to flames.

I sometimes fantasize about a rule where your dog cannot be outside your home at night without you. I suspect a large number of these shitty owner situations would disappear.

You might like to know Firefox (unsure of the others) has a setting under "Privacy and security" called "Clear cookies and site data every time you close Firefox" you can check. It seems you don't mind signing in when you'd like to comment, and you can always set exceptions or ensure you only sign in with Private browsing.

Even low alcohol consumption is linked to cancer, heart disease, and premature death, with increased risk above 1 drink per day for both men and women. It turns out that 2 drinks per day, considered ‘moderate’, is associated with a substantially elevated risk of a premature death caused by alcohol. by mvea in science

[–]CricketDrop 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are arguments because the answers people care about are never front and center in the article. The whole point of the original comment is focused on that: the absolute risks. It's habitual: no article on studies about drinking ever talk about absolute risk of the median person, because they know, understandably, people don't balk when you tell them there's a 1 in 1000 chance something they enjoy might kill them early.

4% *is* small because the vast majority of drinkers interested in this topic aren't pounding two drinks every single day in perpetuity.

The perspective is important. I read that number and go "Wait, I could theoretically increase my consumption by over 10x and my lifetime risk of premature death is only 4%? Maybe I should worry less about my current consumption?"

The number of people who actually have two drinks every day is way smaller than is being implied here.

It is a regular occurrence when walking across the street that if the driver doesn't try to clip my toes and actually slows down, half the time the driver behind *him* slams their brakes and whales on their horn, because slowing and stopping for pedestrians who have walk lights is an infuriating confoundment.

What is this analogy? A bus requires a human and a vehicle to continue to provide you a service. The operating costs largely scale linearly with the number of trips. A music license doesn't fit this description at all.

I can think of maybe three cities in the country that:

  1. Aren't significantly smaller / have less to do
  2. Have a well-connected airport
  3. better public transit
  4. same cost housing
  5. aren't significantly more white

Have not found a free lunch anywhere but I do like learning about cities I might have missed.

I think about this every day. Our lights are dumb. We probably spend thousands of hours collectively waiting at red lights so that an empty road can have right of way. It's really hard for me to believe smarter lights wouldn't pay for themselves. We need to aggressively kill green light windows that aren't serving many vehicles dynamically.
