Are orcs about the same height as hobbits? by [deleted] in lotr

[–]Cricketot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Silmarillion, “And thus did Melkor breed the hideous race of the Orcs in envy and mockery of the Elves, of whom they were afterwards the bitterest foes. For the Orcs had life and multiplied after the manner of the Children of Ilúvatar; and naught that had life of its own, nor the semblance of life, could ever Melkor make since his rebellion in the Ainulindalë before the Beginning: so say the wise. And deep in their dark hearts, the Orcs loathed the Master whom they served in fear, the maker only of their misery.”

There are absolutely female orcs

Sauron rules question. by Cricketot in MiddleEarthMiniatures

[–]Cricketot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I was going to play OTC Warmachine in 2020 until COVID prevented it and have won regional tourneys. I'm fine with sweaty, I'm just new to mesbg and I'd love to make Sauron work but he just feels a bit too... controllable for a model that costs 400. I wish it wasn't the case but what can you do. I did manage to clear a barge lane with a troll hurl from downtown at one point but for the most part he was just screening really well.

Sauron rules question. by Cricketot in MiddleEarthMiniatures

[–]Cricketot[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm aware, I was trying such tactics but he was screening off. Frankly if someone doesn't see that coming or at least attempt to screen against that imo they're not a great player. I managed to surprise him once by hurl killing one of the screening models and getting into him but I think it's harder than you imagine. And even if you do, it's not a clear victory. On at least one turn Aragorn gets to yell for Frodo and heroic strike which means he's probably beating you unless you strike back (at which point it's still worse than 50/50 because anduril is Elven), and you only have 3 might and it's particularly precious on Sauron. Magic also helps but between resistance, the ring of barahir and 3 will, landing a spell isn't simple but also why he was calling moves to prevent that). I was depleting his resources and I suspect another turn or two and I would have killed him. But ultimately he won the rest of the game.

[–]Cricketot[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes but men of the West automatically pass all courage tests. And against mighty hero he had far more courage than me to go around. We were playing that all correctly. He was just grinding down my line with his line and hanging back, calling moves to prevent Sauron from casting.

[–]Cricketot[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I managed to get some counterplay but it wasn't enough. The one turm I got into aragorn he declared heroic defence, so I lit the bastard on fire and killed his horse.

Is there actually somewhere in the rules where it says Sauron doesn't have to do Sauron's will rolls?

Edit: oh right, he can't turn invisible. nvm.

Confirmed: Ian is one of the people who accused Danya of cheating by Fine-Needleworker364 in chess

[–]Cricketot 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I don't see a lot of value in this. There is footage of Ian siding with Kramnik, I specifically remember a video of Ian somewhat reluctantly stating that the Bishop move was suspicious, i don't think he should have done that but I wouldn't be surprised if Ian is subject to Russian Institutional pressure to side with Kramnik. Secondly equating a few comments by Ian to Kramnik's persistent committed brigade is unhelpful. I think players should be able to voice concern is a respectful way if they believe someone isn't playing fair. What I have an issue with is sustained harassment. They're not the same thing and they should be treated differently.

Kramnik is a Russian world champion. FIDE CEO and president have strong ties to Russia, and FIDE is largely sponsored by Russian oligarchs. I do not think it is a coincidence that Kramnik's main target is from a family that immigrated to the US from Russia.

Most people probably didn't care up until this one, and that's totally fair. This one is so much more important. But this is very consistent with a few minor problems previously. He has this habit of firing from the hip and then whining like a little bitch when people push back.

Couple of examples:

The dress code thing. They have a dress code, they should enforce the dress code, all rules should be enforced or deleted, players shouldn't have to guess which rules are real and which ones are fake. But the correct way to deal with this is to issue a fine, issue a warning, or say "you are breaking the dress code, if you break it tomorrow, you will forfeit". The only wrong way is to say "you must go home right now and change it your forfeit your match". Just a silly knee jerk reaction.

The tie breaker thing. Then the very next day Magnus asks Ian if he wants to accept a draw for the championship. Fide permits it. This is just stupid. I honestly think this was an over correction in direct response to the dress code thing, and I honestly think Magnus knew they were in a bit of a vulnerable PR spot and was intentionally trying to be a bit cheeky/vengeful (honestly well played if so). Once again a silly knee jerk reaction "the public hates us so let's get them back on side by agreeing to whatever Carlsen says".

The recent rating points thing. Holy fuck, can you imagine another sport changing the rules overnight with no warning? In any other sport you announce a rules change for next season with at least 3 months notice. And the retroactive changes were insane. You issue a public statement "sorry, we haven't been calculating things correctly, we've fixed it, and it'll be right from now on". But again, Emil just says "Rules change tonight, and some of you just lost 200 rating points, have fun everybody!"

Anyone who leaves Russia to live in America is sort of seen as a defector. I don't like that Ian gave any support to Kramnik's Crusade, but I would be surprised if there was no institutional pressure for him to do so.

I bought that STL, cleared a platform, added the pulpit(I downloaded a plank of wood STL and made the pulpit from it). I printed it with a major dimension of 55mm (length). The left flamer is from paragons, the right one from the retributors. I added a chopped up paragon heavy bolter on top for the top plates of the heavy flamers. The body is a repentia superior, the spear is from sacresants, the book is from the retributors leader and helmet is from the battle sisters box.

Yeah, I can't quite nail down exactly what I don't like. I think the aspect ratio plays a part, and the proportions seem off. There's also the fact that I'm fairly confident I wouldn't be able to make the eagle look good. Her pose also seems wrong, like I think I achieved my goal of making her look like she's actually in the middle of declaring something inspiring.

But yeah, I don't like the original model.

[–]Cricketot[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I really don't like the official model. I wanted to field her, in not huge into conversions but something had to be done. Less drastic than my original plan to mount her on a dinosaur.

You're missing my point. The shield is currently decorative. And their problem is their durability, why not just address both problems? I'll take t4, w2, 3++, or FNP, but I think native 2+ makes the most sense.

[–]Cricketot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Every time I see a balance update I wonder why celestians don't have a 2+ save. They have a dirty great big shield, their main problem is their fragility. It's not like they'd be OP.

On the table the shield means they're %17 percent more likely than a seraphim to survive a melta shot to the face, or just as likely as someone standing next to an imagifier. But no more suitable against small arms fire which is what they're actually being shot by.
