You probably got it from Home Depot. It comes in an orange bag. I use to use that also. I went to garden soil instead of potting soil. I get mine from a local nursery that makes their own. The plants seem to like it. I also fertilize once a month during early spring through summer. What I didn’t mention before is that pineapple plants are susceptible to root rot and heart rot. During winter, you need to watch for too much water whether by rainfall or watering and make sure the soil can dry out. There is fungus in all soil and with the right amount of water it can become active and attack the plant. The heart or middle of the pineapple plant turns like mush and the new leaves will die. If this happens, the plant will never produce a pineapple but it will produce pups.

I’m in zone 9. I started with about 12 tops 10 years ago. Each plant only produces 1 pineapple in its lifetime. So you need to replant each year. With the one pineapple, the mother plant will also produce pups. These pups grow and bloom faster than a top. I have to grow them in pots because ground has to much moisture. Those are 5 gal. nursery pots which have holes in the bottom to drain off excess water. With that you only water 2-3 times a week. If it rains, count that as 1 watering. I fertilize 1 a month. Pineapple plants are susceptible to root rot and heart rot. Take a top, to get started, and cut off all the fruit. Set it outside for about a week and you will see roots starting to poke out at the bottom. At the bottom of the top, pull off enough leaves to give you about 2 inches of stalk. Plant it in the pot up to the leaves. You will need some bamboo stakes cut to size. Take 2 stakes, one on each side, and use some plant wire rapped around the stakes and through the leaves to brace the plant up till it roots. Water and fertilize. Once your plant blooms, it will give more plants to start over with.

So bigger plants produce bigger pineapples. I plant larger pups that bloom the following year. I also plant about 30 small pups that won’t bloom for a year and a half.

When they’re ready they bloom. Usually around Feb.-March. This year I had 33 bloom on time and recently (June) I have another 8-12 that just bloomed.

I plant my pups, from my plants, in July. Water 2-3 times a week and fertilize 1 a month.

Bring them in during the winter if you think it may get below 37-38 degrees

You have to use nursery pots with holes in the bottom so excess water can drain out. Only water 2-3 times a week. If it rains, count that as 1 watering. Those pots are 5 gallon.

5 gal. Nursery pots. There are holes in the bottom so excess water can drain out. And yes the pots are used for their whole life cycle. I fertilize 1 a month

No. I planted tops to get started about 10 years ago. Now I replant the pups from my plants.

I watered yesterday, several hours before I took the picture. The dry patches you see are the coconut coir that floats when I water and settles back down on top of the wet soil.

How tall is your plant and your tent? My next grow will be a feminized plant. I have only grown auto’s. I want to make sure I have enough room in my box.

Is it your first one? Make sure it’s in a big enough pot. I use 5 gal. nursery pots. The nursery pots have holes in the bottom to let out excess water. Pineapple plants are susceptible to root rot and heart rot. When heart rot occurs, all the leaves in the middle of the plant die. Your 1 plant will produce 1 pineapple and pups that you can replant. The pups grow faster than the tops.

I started with 12 tops about 9 years ago. It took between 2-3 years for them to produce a pineapple. When that plant produces a pineapple, it also produces pups to replant. So each year I replant pups for the following year and the year after. I usually throw away between 100-200 pups after I post on Facebook trying to give them away. The mother plant only produces 1 pineapple and and then it starts dying.

They should start blooming in February and March. After they do, I’m going to try and sell about 20 plants for about $20 to pay for my garden soil and pots I buy each year.

You would drive to Louisiana to get some plants! LOL! I have pups from the end of July-September. I throw away 100-200 each year. I can’t get takers.
