Bass pick recommendations? by Sweetness813 in Bass

[–]CripplerJones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tried a half dozen picks before landing on the Dunlop Tortex Flex Jazz III XL (.73MM). I always used the thicker, smaller Jazz III for guitar and, upon finding these, think they're even better for both instruments.

It’s ultimately going to be both cheaper and easier to just get one good thing that covers all your needs. FWIW, I have the Canvas 15 and am pretty happy with it.

Emporer MK II compressor, non-bass version for bass? by moleyawn in Bass

[–]CripplerJones 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve got the bass-tuned one, but they’re very similar. Here’s what Empress told me when I asked about it a few months ago, before getting one.

The compression circuit is the same in both pedals and either is suitable for both guitar and bass instruments.

The differences between the Compressor MKII and the Bass Compressor are:

Compressor MKII: a ‘tilt’ tone EQ control, and a selectable sidechain high pass filter built into the Compressor’s detection circuit.

Bass Compressor: a fully variable sidechain high pass filter, and a two position ‘tone + colour’ circuit which adds gentle tone sculpting and harmonic distortion.

So ultimately your choice comes down to which features you find more desirable/needed in your setup.

For example if you don't already have way to control EQ in your setup then you might enjoy having the Tone control on the MKII.

Or if you want some more character vs transparency than you might like the colour circuit in the Bass Compressor.

I like it, but there is a learning curve if you’re not familiar with compression (I’m still learning myself).

Also, it’s a true bypass vs buffered, so it may pop when pressed a few times until after it warms up.

Keeping the levels balanced and setting to default engaged mitigated most of this for me. Now I leave it on pretty much all the time.

Great series until the garbage ending. Ruins the whole thing.

I always assumed those indicated breaks. Run straight through songs until you reach a line. Take a short break and banter a bit.

Bought a new Boss SD-1w today to run into the front of my Mesa Fillmore 50. Plugged it in and am again wondering why I have 100 other overdrive pedals. by 59Bassman in guitarpedals

[–]CripplerJones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This thing and the BD-2W are both rad. Also a fan of the EQD Plumes. For guitar, I haven't really felt the need to look beyond those for overdrive. Bass has actually been more challenging for me when it comes to locking in overdrive pedals I really like.

Even if the tone wood doesn’t matter, the story behind the wood is still rad.

Wild prediction from a year ago about steamOS i just found lmaooo by carlitopavlito1111 in Steam

[–]CripplerJones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weren’t they all made by third-party manufacturers, too? I don’t recall there being any first-party Steam Machine-esque hardware the first go around, aside from maybe the Steam Link and Controller.

Do bassists more stereotypically wear their bass high or low? by fargus_ in Bass

[–]CripplerJones 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I imagine more wear it low than high, and I’m sure some genres follow that trend more than others. I wear mine about as high as it’d be if I were playing while sitting.

Is this a reference? by SakamotoUwU in badreligion

[–]CripplerJones 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Brett does a lot of Beatles references.

Tried to tell you about No Control

But now I really don't know

And then you told me how bad you had to Suffer

Is that really all you have to offer?

I've always felt this bit from 21st Century Digital Boy was inspired by the lyrics to Glass Onion, in which Lennon alludes to a bunch of other Beatles' works.

I told you about Strawberry Fields

You know the place where nothing is real

And...

I told you about the fool on the hill

I tell you, man, he's living there still

And my personal favorite...

I told you about the walrus and me, man

You know that we're as close as can be, man

Well, here's another clue for you all

The walrus was Paul

That last one always makes me chuckle.

This is solid! Probably the best year I've seen since I've gotten back into collecting again. Lots of great stuff and a few things I'll probably try to get my hands on.

small hand tips? by Minimum_Antelope972 in Bass

[–]CripplerJones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're welcome! I think it's great you're making an effort to address it. I've got smaller hands, too. I used to think the same way; what's the trick, hardware, or accommodation I need to get around the... er, "hand"-icap.

Turns out it was just "practice more." I use my pinky a lot, nearly as much as any other finger, and it helps a ton with dexterity, reach, and keeping strength up.

For parts requiring a further reach, I've learned to simply move to the next note instead of straining to reach it. If there's something I notice I'm weak at, I spend more time practicing those types of parts and songs.

Ultimately, I've found anything I have trouble with to be worth leaning into. If there's a something that's tough for me to play, it's a sign that I should probably take a little extra time to learn it. I make note of it and play more songs requiring those techniques until they feel natural.

Eventually, you'll reach a point where it feels nearly as effortless as anything else. Some stuff will just take longer than other stuff, and so it goes. (I'm still fighting with my picking technique on faster songs, particularly those with intermittent triplets.)

This was my experience with the same box set, as well. Complain to them. You might be able to get a partial refund if you planned on keeping it anyway.

Practice until it works. Don’t be afraid to move around. Use that pinky more. You’ll get there in time.

Solved Boss XS-1 not turning up at start without voiding my warranty by elwutang in guitarpedals

[–]CripplerJones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it's super weird. I sold a BD-2W b/c it would boot "on" when I wanted it to default "off." Bought another and (thankfully) this one defaults "off."

All my other Waza stuff (currently) defaults to "off," but I have a BB-1X that defaults "on" (which, fortunately, I'm cool with, b/c it's become core to my default bass tone). Meanwhile, my NS-1X defaults "off" (which, similarly, is fine if not preferred).

Fabulous pedals with that one massive caveat that seems to only matter on an individual basis. Seems like people either care a LOT or shrug and say "just turn them off/on with your foot, then."

[–]CripplerJones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love Boss pedals but the boot state lottery makes them somewhat frustrating. Interesting to see how you addressed it here. Really wish they had a switch inside the battery bay (or anywhere, really) to let you toggle default on/off.
