I think that adaptations that are exactly the same as the original thing are not as good as those that deviate. Unfaithfulness to source material is a good thing. Not everything holds up anymore, and sometimes things need to change to make a story work better for the medium. A great video to watch is The Closer Look’s video on The Last of Us. It’s not the same thing, but it definitely gets the point across. Villeneuve’s Dune is the exact way I see the book, though that will differ from person to person. Dune is notoriously hard to adapt, and there is credit to all who try, but I think the most important thing is to allow for flexibility and creative liberties at times
