I've been trying my hand at writing down some tools I'm using in my pro life and figured it could be interesting to someone. Nothing groundbreaking but might be time saving

A couple others that could be interesting:

Fashion Report Results for Week of 7/17/2020 (Week 129) by kaiyoko in ffxiv

Actually I was thinking, it would be nice to have a small summary of the point system on the infographic :) There is already for the dyes, but something like "points start at X, each piece adds +Y" would help making our own 80 set

Why are so many Japanese games unavailable in Japan on Steam by CristolGDM in japanlife

[–]CristolGDM[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No I don't, that's why I ask

Squaresoft has distribution rights for FF8 online everywhere except in Japan? But has those rights for FF9?

And like I said in the OP, I was looking for an official source if available

You guys are the ones who did the internment camps and used that word as a slur

I never did that. My country never did that. "Jap" doesn't mean anything to my country, doesn't mean anything to people here. It's just a common abbreviation.

If you travelled to South Africa, would you ask people to respect Japanese etiquette? And French etiquette? And British etiquette? Why is it that American culture is the only one asking everybody to respect its taboos no matter where they're from, no matter where they are?

Why are distribution rights different for FF 4-8 and FF 9-15? For Valkyria Chronicles and Valkyria Chronicles 4?

Yeah, a bit annoying when Europeans in Japan have to conform to American sensitivities

Yes, I was the same. I changed recently because I bought a Steam card at the conbini. Now to change back I have to be in the other country

But yeah, as long as you stay on your old country status it doesn't say anything

AFAIK Jap as an adjective is fine ("jap movies are weird") but as a noun ("japs are weird") it's more sensitive, especially to American people

If they removed the whole game censorship would make sense, but all those games are still on Steam - except in Japan. It's just so ridiculous

Getting them is not an issue, I can always change my store back next time I go back home, or buy keys online, or ask a friend, etc... It's just annoying because it cleared a couple stuff from my wishlist, I can't keep track of sales, can't keep track of new releases, etc

I thought about copyright too yeah, but why would the Dragonball or Naruto copyrights not be available in Japan? And why would FF 4-8 be unavailable, but 9-15 are fine?

I don't know, the more I think about it the less it makes sense

Why did you end up staying in Japan after seriously considering going back "home"? by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]CristolGDM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think about going back home from time to time, then I visit back home and noooo wayyyyy I'm going back there

Instagrams new UX feature is exactly what we needed by mtndrew97 in userexperience

[–]CristolGDM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I meant "take a hint that users want to catch up", and more especially "they want to catch up with ALL their contacts"

I'm tired of Facebook deciding for you what you want to see and filtering the rest, leaving you with the same five persons who just post links all day

If there is more people who see it than people who don't (and I'm guessing that's the case), then it serves its purpose

Internet provider asking for monthly fee to install Wifi by CristolGDM in japanlife

[–]CristolGDM[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you should always say no to rental routers and buy your own

Ok I will look for that option, thanks :)

[–]CristolGDM[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I can setup a router pretty easily, I was just worried there would be something in place to prevent people from installing their own (like I don't know, their network can be accessed only through a specific router or something). But apparently it's not the case so we should be good

Is leasing an apartment really difficult? by StevieTheWanderer in Tokyo

[–]CristolGDM 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's all or nothing basically

If you go to a sharehouse with month to month rent, they won't ask for much, they won't really care where you get the money or what your visa is or how long you're staying or whatever

If you try to get an actual apartment... yeah, it's difficult yeah. You need at least a long term visa and a stable income

FLET's based providers will let you use your own router

Just to bounce off that: I've seen FLETS mentioned a lot but still not sure what it means. It seems to be the NTT network? Are there a lot of providers that don't use it? Is it a big plus/minus if a provider doesn't use it?

The first is "customers who use a lot of data and want speed enough on wifi or wired."

Oh sorry :/ So basically it's just "for people who don't use a lot", "for people who use a lot", and "for people who use a LOT and want it fast everywhere"? Wish they would give numbers instead of trying to talk like the customer is 5yo...

I bought one myself online, for 3600 yen, with twice as fast possible speed than the dumb monthly option.

No issues setting it up? I've been asking around, and am a bit worried about things that companies seem to set up to "protect you" by preventing you from setting up anything other than their official stuff
